Speed Up Your Laptop

Asus70 asked the Laptops forum for speed-up tips.

You've got two approaches for speeding up a Windows PC (short of replacing it): improving the hardware and slimming down Windows.

The most cost-effective way to speed up any PC, hardware-wise, is to add RAM. You might be able to do this with your laptop--especially if you chose a money-saving configuration when you bought it.

To find out, download and run the portable version of System Information for Windows (SIW). Once the program is up, select Memory from the Hardware section to see what you've got and what the motherboard can take.

But don't be surprised if you've already maxed out your RAM. Owning a laptop limits your options for upgrading hardware. Portable PCs are just not as expandable as desktops.

Another hardware option is to replace the hard drive with a Solid State Drive (SSD). But that's extremely expensive, and will likely reduce your storage capacity.

So let's look at what we can do to speed up Windows:

Clean out your autoloaders. It's shocking how many programs load automatically every time you boot. This not only slows down the boot process, but can potentially slow down Windows itself. See Why the Slow Boots? for suggestions on fixing this thorny issue.

Consider sleeker security software. Two autoloaders you can't afford to turn off are your firewall and your real-time anti-malware (also known as antivirus) program. These really do need to be on all of the time. But some of these programs slow you down more than others. See Battle of the Security Superpowers for a discussion of how these programs effect PC speed. You might also want to check performance test results from Anti-Virus Comparative and Antivirus Ware.

Turn off Aero. The fancy, transparent look Microsoft added to Vista (and kept with Windows 7) takes up clock cycles. Personally, I think the transparent look is worth the modest performance hit, but if you disagree, turn it off by following these instructions:

In Vista, right-click the Windows desktop and select Personalize, then Window Color and Appearance. Click Open classic appearance properties for more color options (if you don't see the option, Aero is already off) and select a color scheme other than Windows Aero.

In Windows 7, right-click the Windows desktop and select Personalize. Select a theme that's displayed under the Basic and High Contrast Themes heading.

If you're running Vista, consider upgrading to Win7. It really does speed things up. But take the time to do a custom (clean) install. See How to Upgrade to Windows 7 for directions.

If upgrading your operating system seems a little extreme, than at least turn off Vista's Sidebar. Right-click a blank space on the Sidebar and select Properties. Uncheck Start Sidebar when Windows starts.

My thanks to Car54, Compnovo, and Rommel for their contributions to the original forum discussion.

Lyrics Tattoos

Everyone has at least one favorite song. This song speaks to you, describes you and your life perfectly, has kept you emotionally centered, and generally happy. For some people, this one perfect song has meant the world to them, and they decide to keep that amazing music with them forever. Lyrics tattoos may not be exceptionally common, but for those who get them, they are just as important as the music itself.

The majority of lyrics tattoos feature lyrics in a flowing cursive style; however, you can use a variety of different fonts, depending on where you place them on your body. Many people like to use the full lyrical text, and so you may want to use a finer, smoother font if you choose to place the words on a smaller area such as an arm or a leg. One alternative to this would be to place different parts of the song on different areas of the body. For example, you could place the chorus on one arm, a verse on the other, the refrain on the chest, and any further verses on the lower stomach. If you would prefer to use a bolder font on a small area of the body, you might also have the options of using only a specific part of the lyrics; only using the chorus once, or wrapping the words tightly around the body part.

Symbols and images can also be utilized to enhance lyrics tattoos. Some people may choose to underline important phrases with vines, or border the body of the text with flowers, stars, or chains. Candles may be placed under or above the text to ?illuminate? the words, or they may be given the appearance of being burnt or etched into the skin. Some people like their lyrics tattoos to follow a theme; this is especially true for more modern music where the musician may use very distinctive art for their albums, or may have an identifiable band logo. For more classical lyrics, you may also include a portrait of the artist behind or next to the lyrics. One unusual idea would be to place certain lyrics within the eyes and mouth of the pictured musician. Other musical paraphernalia is also used in this style. You may see lyrics placed on guitars or drums, or you may see them placed above musical notes that fit with the words.

Music speaks to us, and there is no better way to express your passion for it than with lyrics tattoos.

5 Plausible Reasons Eric Schmidt Resigned

Just why exactly is Eric Schmidt stepping down as Google's CEO? The closest Schmidt comes to explaining why is revealed in his now infamous tweet: "Day-to-day adult supervision no longer needed!"

That's not a satisfying answer. And it has only fueled speculation that Schmidt is really gearing up for a job within the Obama Administration or getting ready to be a human Google punching bag for an impending bureaucratic crap storm set to slam into Google soon.

In the absence of a more transparent tweet from Schmidt, here are five plausible reasons he is stepping down as Google's CEO.

1. Out of Gas

Schmidt has lost his energy and focus. That problem became acute about a year ago when he spent a lot of effort trying to keep Google's founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin from withdrawing censored searches from China. "Nudged by a board-member friend and an outside advisor that he [Schmidt] had to re-energize himself, he decided after Labor Day that he could reboot," Ken Auletta wrote in the New Yorker online today. "He couldn't. By the end of the year, he was ready to jump on his own."

2. Going Out With a Bang

Schmidt wants to go out at the top of his game. He's had an outstanding decade at the helm of Google, capped by knocking Microsoft off its lofty perch in the tech pecking order. The battles ahead promise to be difficult and it appears Schmidt doesn't want to fight them. "Eating Microsoft's lunch may have been the salad days for Google," Michael Arrington wrote in TechCrunch. "Now they're fighting dual wars with Apple and Facebook, and the odds, in my opinion, aren't completely in their favor."

3. Bureaucratic Martyrdom

Google is entering a new era and it's time for the troika at its head to realign their duties. There are going to be lots of distractions in the coming months--lawsuits, Department of Justice rumblings and privacy grumblings--which could interfere with innovation at and management of the company. Schmidt may be ready to be a lightning rod for those distractions. "So Schmidt, in the scenario that Google's laid out, tackles all of these issues, which leaves Page to run the house," observed Seth Weintraub in Fortune.

Image Credit: Marina Dimova via VisitBulgaria.info 4. Bureaucratic Ambitions

Schmidt wants a government job. He's already an advisor to President Obama and reportedly they have a great rapport. "Obama needs to bring in people from the business sector with Schmidt's credentials," opines tech columnist John Dvorak. "So I'm expecting some sort of appointment to a commission or council or panel or some other precursor to whatever real job he gets."

5. No Adult Supervision Needed

Adult supervision is no longer needed at the company. When Schmidt arrived on the scene, the running joke was that he provided adult supervision for Page and Brin. To listen to Schmidt today, that responsibility clearly isn't needed any more. "In this new role I know he [Page] will merge Google's technology and business vision brilliantly," Schmidt wrote in the official Google blog. "I am enormously proud of my last decade as CEO, and I am certain that the next 10 years under Larry will be even better! Larry, in my clear opinion, is ready to lead."

Futures lower as investors await earnings blitz (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stock index futures were modestly lower on Tuesday as investors awaited another round of corporate earnings and continued to view the European economy with caution.

European shares were pressured after Britain's economy unexpected contracted in the fourth quarter and Spanish banks retreated after recent gains.

Dow component DuPont and Co (DD.N) reported a fourth-quarter profit that beat expectations and raised its 2011 outlook. The stock edged 0.5 percent higher to $49.15 in premarket trading.

Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N) and Travelers Cos Inc (TRV.N), two Dow components, also reported results early Tuesday. Verizon slid 0.7 percent to $35 before the bell as its profit just missed expectations.

Equities have advanced in recent weeks, in part on anticipation of strong corporate results. Some weak bank earnings last week contributed to a stalled rally, and the S&P ended a seven-week run of gains.

In a major week for earnings, Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N), 3M Co (MMM.N) and U.S. Steel Corp (X.N) are also due to report later in the day.

S&P 500 futures fell 4.1 points and were below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures lost 12 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures dropped 10 points.

Shares of American Express Co (AXP.N) and Texas Instruments Inc (TXN.N) fell in extended trading late Monday after reporting results. American Express was pressured by an uncertain regulatory outlook, while TI's gross margins disappointed investors.

On the economic data front, the November S&P Case/Shiller Home Price Index will come out at 9 a.m. EST (1400 GMT). Economists expect a drop of 0.8 percent versus a 1.0 percent fall in the previous month.

The Conference Board will release its January reading on consumer confidence at 10 a.m. EST (1500 GMT) Economists see confidence rising slightly to 54.3 from December's 52.5.

The International Monetary Fund revised its forecast for world growth higher, citing the impact from a package on U.S. taxes.

President Barack Obama will give his annual State of the Union address Tuesday evening and is expected to focus on jobs and the economy.

Stocks rose Monday on strength in natural resource and technology shares as the recent positive momentum returned.

British pound hammered by shrinking economy (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) ? Sterling slumped against the euro and dollar on Tuesday as official data showed the British economy shrank surprisingly at the end of last year, analysts said.

In London trade, the pound slid to $1.5783 from $1.5988 in New York late on Monday. The euro rose to 0.8604 from 0.8527 on Monday.

"The pound tumbled across the board after preliminary fourth quarter GDP came in significantly below expectations," said Michael Hewson, an analyst at trading group CMC Markets.

"Part of this can be put down to the bad weather in December; however the extent of the fall has spooked markets and seen the pound plummet and gilt (bond) prices soar as the likelihood of a rate hike disappears in the near term."

Britain's economy shrank by a shock 0.5 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010, dashing expectations for growth, as freezing weather sparked the first contraction since 2009.

Gross domestic product (GDP) fell 0.5 percent in the three months to December, after expansion of 0.7 percent in the third quarter, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said in a statement giving its initial estimate.

That was the first drop since the third quarter of 2009 and confounded expectations for modest growth of 0.4 percent in the fourth quarter, according to analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires.

"These awful figures present the Bank of England with a major headache but also justify (BoE governor) Mervyn King's reluctance to countenance a rise in rates."

British interest rates have stood at a record low 0.50 percent since March 2009, while prior to Tuesday's data many economists were forecasting a rise soon to help counter strong inflation in Britain.

Meanwhile, there is growing expectations that the European Central Bank is eyeing an interest rate rise to respond to inflation pressures in Europe.

The euro touched a two-month high of $1.3686 late Monday after ECB chief Jean-Claude Trichet warned against inflation pressures in the eurozone, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

"Trichet's remarks raised speculation that the ECB may raise interest rates," said Akihiro Tanaka, dealer at Resona Bank.

Optimism is also growing that the European Union is getting to grips with its financial and sovereign debt crisis, with political turmoil in Ireland failing to dampen sentiment.

Dealers noted Spain's announcement on new plans to reform and stabilise its regional savings banks, seen as a weak link in the financial system.

In London on Tuesday, the euro changed hands at $1.3581 against $1.3635 in New York late Monday, at 111.83 yen (112.50), 0.8604 (0.8527) and 1.2876 Swiss francs (1.2939).

The dollar stood at 82.35 yen (82.48) and 0.9480 Swiss francs (0.9478).

The pound was at $1.5783 (1.5988).

On the London Bullion Market, the price of gold fell to $1,327.70 an ounce from $1,343 late on Monday.

HP lays Neoview BI platform to rest

After four years of struggling with the business intelligence technology, Hewlett-Packard finally pulls the plug

Hewlett-Packard has officially consigned its Neoview to history, less than four years after introducing it to the market as the company's core offering in the business intelligence (BI) space.

In a brief statement today, HP said it has decided to "stop actively selling" Neoview.

[ Also on InfoWorld: Self-service BI is catching on and the Microsoft-HP integration deal is yielding four new appliances. | Keep up on the day's tech news headlines with InfoWorld's Today's Headlines: First Look newsletter. ]

"Our customers are demanding options for addressing an emerging set of requirements around the explosive growth of data, new types of information, new classes of analytics and new delivery models," the statement said.

The statement added that HP will continue to work with partners in addressing "next-generation" BI requirements. No information was immediately available on what HP's plans are for existing Neoview customers, or how long the company will continue to support them.

HP's decision to pull the plug on Neoview has been expected for sometime. It was all but confirmed last week when HP and Microsoft unveiled a series of data warehousing appliances featuring HP hardware running Microsoft's BI software.

HP's Neoview, an integrated hardware and software appliance targeted at BI applications, was launched with considerable fanfare during Mark Hard's tenure at HP. The product however largely languished under his leadership and failed to make any impression in the market.

According to estimates by the analysis firm Forrester Research, HP sold less than 100 enterprise Neoview installations during the past four years. In that same time, companies including EMC, Oracle, IBM, and newcomer Netezza (which was recently acquired by IB ) have managed to establish themselves as leading players in the sizzling-hot BI market.

Much of Neoview's problems stemmed from a lack of focus that left it hopelessly overpriced in a market increasingly dominated by aggressively priced BI appliances from other vendors.

HP's decision to can Neoview comes as the company is expanding its relationship with Microsoft in the BI space. The companies launched several new appliances last week, combining Microsoft's software with HP's server hardware.

The products included a $2 million appliance featuring Microsoft's parallel data warehouse (PDW) edition of SQL Server 2008 R2, as well as a business data warehouse product for small- and medium-size businesses.

Dead Space: Scarier Than Clowns or Invisible Skeletons

dead_space_1.jpg

To paraphrase Stephen King, if you find you cannot horrify, you go for the gross-out. EA's third-person "survival horror" game Dead Space (for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3) frequently horrifies and grosses out. It's also ironically produced -- if we're to believe Wikipedia and MobyGames -- by a guy who paints "fantastic sunsets, huge redwoods, snowy mountains and colorful seascapes." Let's just say there are no sunsets, redwoods, mountains, or seascapes in Dead Space, though there are buckets of blood, mangled body parts, mangled body parts protruding from bodies in ways you've perhaps never imagined, and imaginative ways to excise said parts from the skittering, screeching, spine-tingling trunks of creatures you wouldn't want to meet in broad daylight, much less on a derelict space freighter.

Does it matter that you're tethered to a story that trots out Gaming's Top 100 Tropes like it's teaching a freshmen level seminar? Not really. You're here for one purpose: to walk into rooms, have something pop out and go boo, fumble to carve the freakishly nimble mess of flesh into giblets before it eats your face off, then do it again times 11 or 12 hours of Space Hulk meets John Carpenter's The Thing. Did I say "carve"? Dead Space takes the counterintuitive and tactically intriguing tack that shooting off limbs instead of central body parts is how you kill enemies faster.

dead_space_2.jpg

Besides, we all know by now that interstellar space distress signals are just Evil Hallmark Invitations to die messily and with a chorus of shrieking violins or guttural whisperers (or both) soundtracking your gurgling, squelching demise. Still, someone's got to go in with a bucket or a bazooka and mop up the mess, so why not a guy like Isaac (Asimov + Arthur C.) Clarke? He's the right name, and more importantly, the right profession: an engineer, which means he's Mister Fixit in a pinch, and this is a game full of pinches: Missing keys, broken widgets, mechanical puzzles, an A-list of malfunctioning hatches and elevators -- you name it and you'll probably have to crawl over half the ship to get it, then half as much again to carry it back to where you started from.

Which is all the excuse the design team at EA Redwood Shores needs to not so much kill the lights, as make them juke and jive while creatures that resemble amped up versions of a Clive Barker action figure lurch and scramble and strike stomach-upending poses. In fact it's the work of minutes, counting the intro, until you're kicking and hacking through snarling squads of creatures called "necromorphs," which just so happens to dovetail with a game design tidbit Bethesda's Todd Howard (Fallout 3) offered Gamasutra's Chris Remo in an interview published today. Explaining the way his own games start, Howard said: "I've always been interested in games that just start, and you play them, [and] the character generation is part of the game."

Scrap the character generation bit (there's some statistical health and weapons augmentation as you locate scattered power-ups, but that's it) and Dead Space fits Howard's bill to a tee, a game that accelerates from zero to 60 to "scared-out-of-your-wits" in the space of minutes (maybe five, tops, if you're a dawdler). If you hate lengthy preambles and interruptive cutscenes where you're standing around while other people blah blah blah, Dead Space is Just the Facts, Ma'am, or at least the facts according to a weapons arsenal that speaks the lingua franca of bolt cutters and stasis fields and other sundry energy weapons.

dead_space_3.jpg

Of course there's still a bit of cliche to tromp through, like the part where you're conveniently separated from your crew almost immediately, the series of escalating encounters with pop-up necromorphs in dim lit corridors plagued by steam and tendrils of smoke, the solving one engineering problem after another to open doors that leads to more doors with increasingly complex "solve" states. There's the wonderfully nuanced if altogether familiar soundtrack with its inexplicable and unintelligible whisper sounds accompanied by shivery violins -- screeching string sections that slow to clicking arpeggios like fingers on a chalkboard plucking the ribs of a fishbone -- all keyed to make your nerves jangle (hey, it works!). You've got "found" audio logs that tell the story on the go, pretty well cribbed from System Shock (take note if you thought these originated with BioShock). And who can forget all those crew buddies who, despite occupying a completely different part of the ship, can somehow "see" every move you make, and who frequently chime in to offer clairvoyant advice?

On the other hand, Dead Space gets plenty right. The interface, for instance, is a thing of subtle beauty that carries off a few high wire ideas with watch-for-imitators-to-come aplomb. Game designers are always asking questions like "How do I scrub extraneous information from a heads-up display?" or "How do I keep players focused on the action and not a bunch of peripheral dials and switches?"

Simple. Make you the interface, or in this case, Isaac Clarke.

Take something as straightforward as "health," commonly a bar or dial or derivative of a number between one and 100 running along a corner or panel of the screen. In Dead Space, it's a stack of cylindrical mechanical vertebrae running up the back of Isaac's space suit, an electric blue exo-skeletal spine you can easily and intuitively monitor without feeling like the camera guy tagging along behind the hero (since the game is third-person, you tend to be viewing Clark from behind and slightly off to the right). Other attributes represent as parts of the suit too, like your "stasis" power levels, which feed an ability to momentarily zap a creature or object into slow-mo.

Bravo, person-who-put-all-that-together, and take a bow.

dead_space_4.jpg

But enough said for now, because I need to stop typing and go back and finish the darned thing, which I'm masochistically and somewhat regrettably playing on the "kill me, I'm easy" difficulty setting. As it stands now, I'm calling "buy it."

Quick design-y sidenote: Throughout the game, Isaac Clarke doesn't say a word, he just grunts and gasps apprehensively. We're only afforded a glimpse of his face at the outset (and, I'm told, the ending). The trouble with this fairly common approach is that it makes you feel like a child at the outset. People wheel and deal around you, laugh or joke, talk to or tease you, but all you can do is sit or stand in mute repose. As soon as you've boarded the space freighter, you pop on a full-masked helmet, completing the psychological distancing trick that's typically employed to imply that you're the hero, not the third-person avatar you're starting at on screen. Maybe it's that you can see Isaac's avatar as you play here (instead of just a pair of hands, or "floating gun"). Granted it's a subtle, nitpicky thing, and maybe you won't care or even notice, but for some reason Isaac's uncanny silence drew my attention in Dead Space, and made me wish he had more than merely a physical role to play.

Quick tech-y sidenote: If you're thinking about running the PC version and you're wondering how this thing performs, try "amazingly." I've got it running at the highest all around detail settings in Boot Camp mode on a 2.4GHz Macbook Pro with 2GB RAM and a measly NVIDIA 8600M GT w/256MB VRAM and it's smooth as glass while somehow managing to look every bit like something that'd run on dual SLI GPUs in a monster rig.

HDBaseT Shows Off Multimedia Megacable

With help from good old Ethernet, a nascent cable spec called HDBaseT aims to do away with the need for individual set-top boxes in every room.

HDBaseT runs uncompressed video (including 3D), audio, networking, 100 watts of power and a control signal over a single Cat5e Ethernet cable through distances of 100 meters. The spec was finalized in July 2010, and the HDBaseT Alliance has previously demonstrated a single video source running to a single television.

In a demo at CES 2011, the Alliance was feeding multiple sources, including a Playstation 3, Blu-ray player and PC, through a single cable from a nearby converter box.

The idea is to let users store their entire home entertainment set-up in one room -- or a closet -- and distribute video throughout the house with one Ethernet cable per television. So if your kid is playing video games on the living room big screen TV, you can kick him out and he can resume playing on the television in his room.

HDBaseT has a couple big hurdles to deal with before it becomes practical for consumers. First, it needs TV and set-top box makers to get on board. Although many set-tops and TVs have Ethernet jacks already, they lack the necessary chip, made by Alliance member Valens, to translate all the data within the input and output sources. For now, HDBaseT requires expensive and bulky inverters at each end.

There's also the cost of the converter box, which runs between your collection of set-top boxes and video sources. Today, these hulking boxes are meant for professional use and cost thousands of dollars. HDBaseT hopes the price will drop to around $100 within five years.

Even with costs down and native adoption in tech products, HDBaseT must compete with wireless transfer methods, which now include Wi-Di and ActionTec's MyWirelessTV. They won't transfer electric power like HDBaseT, and the media will be compressed, but the convenience of wireless may ultimately win out. Besides, most people don't have Ethernet jacks running into every room.

HDBaseT hopes to see native adoption in consumer tech products within the next year to 18 months.

Antivirus 2011: Digital Defenders

Illustration by John HerseyIf you haven't bought a new version of your antivirus software in a couple of years, now may be a good time to do so. Malware is evolving faster than ever, and the latest generation of antivirus software is better equipped to handle this rapid pace of change. If your antivirus software is a few years old, it may not be able to defend against this onslaught effectively, even if you faithfully download new virus definitions. In recent years, the technology that powers antivirus software has changed dramatically: An antivirus package you purchased a few years ago may be able to stop known viruses and other known malware, but brand-new, as-yet unknown viruses can be more dangerous, and newer products do a much better job of stopping them.

So which paid antivirus program should you pick? That's where we come in. PCWorld teamed up with AV-Test (av-test.org), a respected security-software testing lab based in Germany. Together, we looked at 13 paid antivirus products from a number of leading security companies. We provide links here to full reviews of all 13, plus summaries of the reviews' key points.

AV-Test's multifaceted testing procedure looks not only at how well an antivirus product can detect malware using traditional, largely signature-based methods (that is, employing a database of known malware types), but also at how well it can block brand-new, as-yet unknown malware. AV-Test also examines how well a security product can clean up after an infection in the event that a piece of malware does get through.

This article focuses on paid stand-alone antivirus products, not free antivirus software or full-fledged security suites. Paid antivirus usually comes with better technical support options and more-comprehensive protection features than free programs. Suites go further still, offering features such as firewalls, parental controls, identity theft protection services, and more.

See "Fee vs. Free: Free and Paid Antivirus Programs Compared" (some of our rankings have changed since that roundup appeared in November) and "Battle of the Security Superpowers," which lists our top security suite picks.

Antivirus Trends

This year, more and more antivirus packages come with tie-ins to so-called cloud services, in which fresh information on brand-new threats pushes down from the vendor's Web servers to your PC. This is a trend we began to see over the past year or two, but it has really taken off in this year's batch of products.

Cloud-based detection takes many forms. In some products, such as Norton AntiVirus, it's used in reputation-based systems that pull together information on files and file types from users around the world to better detect suspicious files more quickly. Norton calls its system Quorum, but each company that offers a reputation-based process has its own name for the feature.

In other products, such as Trend Micro Titanium Antivirus, the bulk of the malware detection actually takes place in the cloud--remotely, on the company's servers, rather than on your PC--with the intention of catching malware sooner and reducing the performance impact on your system.

And the Winner Is...

Since an antivirus product is only as good as its ability to block baddies, we based 70 percent of each program's overall score on its success in malware detection (and blocking and cleanup), with features, ease of use, and overall drag on system performance accounting for the rest.

It was a close race overall, but Symantec Norton AntiVirus 2011 took home the top prize with its excellent malware detection, blocking, and cleanup. BitDefender Antivirus Pro 2011 and G-Data AntiVirus 2011 round out the top three.
