And the Winner of the Most-Blocked Website Award Is...

If you're thinking of setting up Web filtering for your organization, OpenDNS can offer some clues. It's just published a report about the most-blocked and most-whitelisted sites of 2010.

The winner is Facebook, which takes the award for the most-blacklisted Website. No fewer than 23 percent of OpenDNS business subscribers consider it forbidden Internet territory for their workers.

Happily for Facebook, it's also the second most whitelisted Website, which is to say, it's a site that's permitted when most other sites are blocked.

Clearly, one man's waste of time is another's essential.

OpenDNS is a subscription service that can be swapped in by organizations or individuals to replace their ISP's domain name system (DNS) servers. DNS is what's used to convert human-readable addresses, such as pcworld.com, into the numerical IP addresses required by computers.

Most DNS servers simply duplicate master servers, but OpenDNS offers powerful filtering tools too. This raises the hackles of some but the fact is that OpenDNS is popular, serving 30 billion DNS look-ups every day and handling the DNS requirements of one percent of the entire Internet.

In terms of blacklisting by businesses, Facebook was followed in OpenDNS's list by MySpace, blocked by 13 percent of subscribers, and YouTube, blocked by just under 12 percent.

The latter is undoubtedly on the list due to concerns about Internet bandwidth being wasted on movie downloads. Think what happens when a funny video e-mail gets forwarded around the office. Lots of people suddenly request a significant amount of data, which can bring a Net connection to its knees.

Facebook and MySpace are probably blocked by organizations that wish to stop employees wasting work time updating their status.

Interestingly, the top 10 blacklisted addresses also include ad.doubleclick.net (5.7 percent) and ad.yeldmanager.com (1.8 percent). Both addresses typically serve adverts and their blocking might indicate privacy concerns within organizations about tracking by advertiser cookies. Alternatively, it might be that sympathetic network admins "switch off" adverts for their users.

Whitelisting allows OpenDNS users to let through sites that might otherwise be banned because the user has chosen to block entire categories of Websites.

Of the popular blocking categories, there are no surprises: Pornography tops the list, followed by sexuality and then tasteless sites. The fourth most-blocked category includes proxy and anonymizer sites. Smart individuals use these to get around filtering software (hence the desire to block them!), although they're often torturously slow to use due to massive demand.

In terms of whitelisted sites, the top three are YouTube, with 12.7 percent of users choosing to let it through, followed by Facebook (12.6 percent), and Gmail (9.2 percent).

So why allow through Facebook, when so many choose to block it? Other than the "kindly admin" theory, it may well be that businesses are starting to realize the business potential of social networking. There's even a business case to be made for embracing YouTube. Blocking sites often used for fun by employees can be a knee-jerk reaction, and concerns about employee time wasting is better combated in other ways, such as employee training.

Indeed, blocking sites in any way is questionable, from an ethical point of view as well as business, although a significant proportion of OpenDNS's paying customers schools and other public bodies, which perhaps have a better reason than most. One out of three K-12 public schools in the US are customers, for example.

You can read the full OpenDNS report here.

Norse Tattoos

tattoo designs

There are many reasons why people get Norse tattoos; in general, though, these designs are thought to express a certain amount of strength and dignity, and ? depending on the type that you get ? they can represent a myriad of mystical qualities. They are also sometimes used to show pride in heritage amongst those with northern European roots.

When many people think of Norse tattoos, the first things that come to mind are often runes. These symbols are widely considered to be quite powerful, so you may find it beneficial to do a good deal of research prior to committing to any of these pieces. This style frequently consists of the runic alphabet. This alphabet can make up an entire name, initials, or whole quotes, and may be made up in the design of the Elder Futhark or Anglo-Saxon runes; however, they may also be done in a Bindrune fashion, which shows one or more of the runes running together in a flowing manner. Runic charms are also quite popular for this particular style. Unlike the similar-looking Celtic patterns, runic charms tend to be more asymmetrical, and they may appear in a variety of hues, but are most commonly done in either basic black or red ink. Some of the more popular of the charm-like Norse tattoos include the ?helm of awe? or Aegishjalmur ? which is said to inspire power and protection in the wearer ? and the Vegvisir, or runic compass, which is thought to help guide the wearer through life.

Although they are slightly less common, you might also see Norse pieces that use long, decorative bands that are similar in appearance to Celtic knots, and you may also see art that depicts Viking warriors. Many of the Viking pieces done are considered historically inaccurate, and show the warriors in exceptionally violent poses, with ornate weapons, and horned or winged helmets. Although this style is thought to be inaccurate, many people prefer them, as they make for a more spectacular image. While the knot-work designs are usually more modest, and may consist of simple patterns, or more ornate work like the ?gripping beast,? which depicts at least two animals that are thoroughly entwined.

Though it is advisable to be mindful when it comes to Norse tattoos, you will find that whatever you choose, you are certain to have something that is both beautiful, and practically radiating with strength and tradition.

Google Android tablets gain traction with developers

Apple iPad remains the top tablet targeted by app builders in survey

Although Apple's iPad remains number one in the hearts of tablet application developers, Google Android tablets are increasingly piquing programmers' interest, according to a survey conducted earlier this month.

In a survey of 2,235 developers by IDC and tools vendor Appcelerator, 74 percent of respondents were "very interested' in building applications for Android tablets, up from 62 percent in the previous iteration of the survey from last September. The formidable iPad attracted the interest of 87 percent of respondees, up 3 points from the last survey. A report based on the latest survey, entitled "Appcelerator IDC Mobile Developer Report, January 2011," is being released Tuesday.

[ RIM officials last week talked up enterprise plans for their BlackBerry and related products. | Stay on top of the latest issues in software development with InfoWorld's Developer World newsletter.]

"The interest has spiked significantly, where Android tablets are nearing iPads in their interest level," said Scott Schwarzhoff, Appcelerator vice president of marketing. Appcelerator sees a correlation between increased interest and the announcement of 85 Android tablets at this month's Computer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Developers listed price, minimized fragmentation, and the upcoming Honeycomb software as the most crucial factors for Android tablets to succeed. Developers are expected to build applications for newspapers, rich media, entertainment, and conferencing for Android tablets, Schwarzhoff said.

One factor that does not seem to be affecting interest in the Android platform overall was Oracle's lawsuit against Google claiming patent infringement. Almost no one was bothered by it in the last survey, and the issue was not even raised in the current survey, Schwarzhoff explained. "The common belief is that Oracle and Google will work it out," he said.

Appcelerator polled developers on their wish list for the upcoming iPad 2; new camera capabilities, a USB connector, and an improved retina display were all cited. Also, RIM's upcoming PlayBook tablet grew in interest from 16 percent of developers last September to 28 percent now.

There was good news for Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 smartphone platform in Appcelerator's survey. "Windows Phone 7 came out better than expected," said Schwarzhoff. Interest in building for the software giant's new platform increased to 36 percent, up from 28 percent in the previous survey.

The new figure was just 2 percentage points behind the number of developers who want to build for RIM's far more established BlackBerry smartphone. BlackBerry had the interest of 34 percent of developers in the previous survey. The iPhone, however, drew the interest of 92 percent of developers; the figure was 91 percent last time around.

Comment on Digital Strips Episode 228 ? Book Club: Templar, AZ ? 4th Edition by xiao mao

It?s time again to gather at Daku?s house for another Digital Strips Book Club! I brought lemon squares and my recipe for those Swedish meatballs and I hope you read the assigned pages for this month. We don?t? well, we don?t have too much to say about Chapter 4 because it embodies the antithesis of that classic Elvis tune (a little less action, a little more conversation).

But we kick things off with a team-up effort on the part of Rosscott and Caldy, both so named because they live on the Internet. Their comics? Respectively:

After a mutual friend of theirs was wrongly ripped off, intellectual property style, they decided to collaborate on a comic/flowchart (see als0: here) to determine whether or not you, the average-to-above-average Internet user, are harming the Web with your ability to give credit where credit is due. We debate the effectiveness and necessity to point out these facts to those who don?t seem to care about them in the first place.

Amongst this debate, I?d be remiss if I didn?t correct the first of my many mistakes in giving you the name of the store where you can find the fruits of this labor:

Another online shop destination that offers various shirts for geeks, supposedly (miraculously) devoid of any copyright infringement or IP theft:

Finally, we tardily note the rewarding of the Xeric Grant to Steve LeCoulliard.

His work on Much the Miller?s Son (which we reviewed here) is both old-school and rowdy, never anything less than hilarious and professional. This grant will help him produce Book 3 of his comic and couldn?t be granted to a more deserving cartoonist.

The Toothaches? ?Sisyphus? takes us into our second segment, where we give our thoughts on the fourth chapter of Templar, AZ. I?ll let that conversation speak for itself, but needless to say we hope the comic finds a new drive and purpose in the next chapter.

Regardless of where we end up at the end of this Book Club, I?ll be glad I read this comic for myself, so the opinions I have about it are none but my own. I encourage you to follow along with us and do the same!

Comment on Digital Strips 226 ? Things We Liked 2010 by The Geek

Another year has come and gone and with it the chance to sit around waxing nostalgic about the things can came and went with it. That?s what Internet windbags like to do during the last week of a year and who are we to be any less of windbags.

Every year we like to look back and recap what we think were the best comics of the year. Really it tends (and this year is no different) to devolve into us just listing off comic after comic (as the show notes will attest) and fits of indecision as to which one we like the most.

With the deaths of Zuda, we one had three categories this year. Best Horizon?s Watch (new comic), Best Comic Reviewed by Digital Strips and Best over all comic. We?re always changed the rules as we go, and here we go again, I?m not going to tell you who wins here. You have to tune in to find out.

Remove Duplicate Files with Duplicate Cleaner

A couple months back I wrote about Fast Duplicate File Finder, a free utility that scans selected folders on your hard drive, locates any duplicate files, then gives you the option of removing them.

Reader Steve just wrote in to tell me about a similar program he likes even better. It's DigitalVolcano's free Duplicate Cleaner 2.0, though I'm not sure I agree it's the better of the two. (Be sure to click the Download link on the left side of the page, not the big inviting Download button in the main pane.)

I do think Duplicate Cleaner has a friendlier interface (though the way it presents its "found" duplicates is a little confusing, which is why I went into the settings and chose a different background color for one of the groups).

It also seems to have more parameters for finding duplicates and choosing what to do with them after they've been found.

However, FDFF does a better job showing previews of duplicate images (so you can make sure they are indeed duplicates). Duplicate Cleaner forces you to open a selected image in a separate window, which is a minor hassle.

Ultimately, I just wanted to point you to another program that can do the very important, very useful job of finding and eliminating duplicates. It's up to you to decide which one you like best.

One final note: always exercise extreme caution when using any program like this, making sure to have a current backup available just in case. Another reader recently informed me that he made a mistake while using Fast Duplicate File Finder, and lost a big chunk of his photo library.

Would you recommend this story? YES NO

WAGGING THE DOG: World's only superpower admits failure to stop Israel's illegal settlement drive

ZOGs

'Obama administration gives up on settlement freeze'

Associated Press (AP); December 7, 2010

WASHINGTON -- From the start of his term, President Barack Obama was determined to defy the cynics and doubters and push for peace in the Middle East.

[False. The latest developments only serve to confirm what we already knew: that the Zionist-managed Obama regime, from the very beginning, was never sincere about its stated desire to see the emergence of an independent Palestinian state -- 800]

But by Tuesday, the White House's efforts to broker a deal in the decades-old dispute between Israelis and Palestinians had faltered -- demonstrating once again why it is one of the world's most intractable conflicts.

After months of grueling diplomacy, using a mixture of pressure and promises, the White House abandoned attempts to persuade Israel to slow West Bank settlement activity.

The Palestinians had demanded the freeze in exchange for engaging in direct talks that were supposed to lead to a Palestinian state living side-by-side in peace with Israel. That deal, it was hoped, would lead to a broader Middle East peace accord.

Two American officials said the administration has concluded that the strategy of seeking a freeze wasn't working, while insisting the administration was not back at square one.

But the talks stalled in September, barely a month after they started. The Palestinians refused to return to direct negotiations until a new freeze was in place following the expiration of an earlier, 10-month Israeli slowdown in settlement expansion.

Now, said the US officials, American pressure for a three-month moratorium and the US incentives package, which included political, diplomatic and security assurances for Israel, are off the table. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Obama's ambitious bid to succeed in the Middle East where other presidents had failed was always a gamble.

But the effort's apparent breakdown comes at a time when the administration is struggling on a number of other fronts abroad. There is slow progress in the Afghanistan war, increasing friction with China and the embarrassing deluge of confidential diplomatic cables released by the website [read 'psy-op'] WikiLeaks.

The US officials said the administration was not giving up efforts to broker a peace deal and noted that Israeli and Palestinian negotiators will visit Washington next week for consultations.

The US will be talking with both sides in the coming days, one of the officials said, while Arab states and other interested countries also will be consulted.

However, the administration's decision to drop support for the Palestinians' key demand could mean the end of the moribund peace process.

Obama had made Israeli-Palestinian peace a major goal of his administration, appointing seasoned peace negotiator George Mitchell as his special Mideast envoy on his second day in office.

Mitchell made dozens of trips to the region to get the parties to agree to direct talks. In early September, with the expiration of the initial slowdown looming, Obama brought Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian [Authority] President [and Zionist front-man] Mahmoud Abbas along with the leaders of Jordan and Egypt to launch the face-to-face discussions, which failed.

Neither Israeli nor Palestinian officials would comment on the developments in Washington before their official announcement.

Earlier Tuesday, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said the US had halted talks with Israel on settlement activity because Washington was distracted by the WikiLeaks release of secret documents.

State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley responded that Israel may have been preoccupied with putting out a huge forest fire that burned until Sunday.

The US had been pressing Israel to renew a moratorium on new settlement construction in exchange for security guarantees and diplomatic assurances of support. Israel wanted those in writing, as well as a pledge that east Jerusalem would be exempt from the moratorium.

The Palestinians refused to return to the peace talks unless Israel halted all building in the West Bank and east Jerusalem -- lands they want for part of their future state.

Peace talks began in September but ground to a halt three weeks later after Israel's original moratorium on new West Bank construction expired.

Netanyahu returned from a November trip to the US with a list of guarantees, including 20 next-generation stealth fighter planes and US pledges to veto anti-Israel resolutions at the United Nations, according to Israeli officials.

In exchange, Israel was asked to renew the expired limits on settlement construction.

Days later, the deal snagged after members of Netanyahu's Cabinet demanded a written pledge from the US that the moratorium would exclude east Jerusalem. Such a pledge never materialized.

The US had wanted a moratorium in the hopes that it would allow Israel and the Palestinians to make enough progress in drawing their future borders to make the settlement question irrelevant.

With borders determined, Israel could resume building on any territories it would expect to keep under a final peace deal.

But Israeli officials said Tuesday that short of an understanding on borders, a crisis could erupt if Israel agreed to the freeze sought by the US.

Now, said Israeli officials, insisting on anonymity because of the sensitivity of the contacts, the US and Israel have agreed on a statement that "in the coming days and weeks, efforts will continue toward finding ways to renew the direct negotiations in order to reach a framework that would lead in the end to an agreement between the two sides."

Yasser Abed Rabbo, secretary general of the PLO, blamed Israel for the impasse.

"It is clear that the failure of the American efforts is entirely a result of the obstacles and conditions placed by Mr. Netanyahu," Rabbo said. He said the Palestinians would have to consult with their Arab allies on their next move.

The above article can be found here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/12/08/AR2010120800454.html

'Disappointment all round'

Al-Ahram Weekly (Egypt); December 16, 2010

On 7 December, the Obama administration admitted defeat in its attempts to cajole, beg and bribe the Israeli government into accepting a partial West Bank settlement "freeze" so that direct negotiations with the Palestinians could continue -- and that the anchor of its Middle East policy for 20 months had sunk.

Not that failure, shipwreck, collapse appeared in any of the official Washington dispatches.

"We have been pursuing a moratorium as a means to create conditions for a return to meaningful and sustained negotiations," said State Department spokesman PJ Crowley. But "after a considerable effort, we have concluded that this does not create a firm basis to work towards our shared goal of a framework agreement."

The moratorium -- a 90-day limited freeze on settlement starts in the occupied West Bank -- had been sugarcoated with incentives (such as 20 free F-35 stealth bombers and a guaranteed US veto on "hostile" resolutions at the UN Security Council) for Israel's ultranationalist coalition government to swallow.

Binyamin Netanyahu spat them out. He knew such gifts will come gratis given Washington's promises to protect Israel at the UN or preserve its "qualitative" military edge in the region. Even as he was negotiating the moratorium Congress was approving an increase in military aid to Israel from $2.75 billion in 2010 to $3 billion in 2011.

What the Israeli prime minister was really looking for was a written US pledge that occupied East Jerusalem would be excluded from any freeze, in effect conferring an Israeli "right" to build there. Even for an administration as supine as Obama's this was an "incentive" too far.

Instead, the moratorium idea was ditched amid un-attributable briefings that Israel and the Palestinians were unlikely to resolve in 90 days final status issues they had been unable to resolve in 17 years.

True, but no amount of spin can camouflage the scale of the American retreat. Barack Obama began his presidency accepting the Palestinian and Arab view that a complete settlement freeze throughout the occupied territories was necessary for any credible peace process to resume.

Faced with pretty minor Israeli resistance, he accepted a partial moratorium in the West Bank while arm-twisting the Palestinians to go back to negotiations they knew were meaningless.

Now -- while still not accepting the "legitimacy of continued settlement activity" on Palestinian land -- he has simply tossed back settlements as one more bilateral final status issue to be sorted out by the parties themselves. In less than two years, his administration has swung from absolute opposition to absolute acceptance of settlements.

Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) official Yasser Abed Rabbo was aghast: "If they [the US] can't convince Israel or force it to stop settlement construction for a specified period of time, how will they make Israel accept a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders?"

The short answer is they can't or won't. At a Washington conference on 9 December, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said her administration would be replacing its single-minded focus on a freeze (full or partial) with an even more hopeless policy: proximity talks so the two sides can talk to the Americans about the issues that divide them, something they have been doing for even longer than 17 years.

She said nothing about her government's goal of reaching a framework agreement within a year. And she warned the Palestinian leadership not to take their case to international forums like the UN Security Council: an "alternative" to bilateral talks buoyed by the recent decisions of Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina to "recognize Palestine as a free and independent state" based on the 1967 armistice lines.

"The US and international community cannot impose a solution," she said. "And even if we could, we would not, because it is only a negotiated agreement between the parties that will be sustainable... Unilateral efforts at the UN are not helpful and undermine trust."

The West Bank Palestinian leadership met the US failure with anger, dismay and inaction. But there would be no Palestinian response to this "difficult crisis in peace process" until the PLO had consulted with Egypt, Jordan and the Arab League, said Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on 7 December.

It's easy to see why. If the crisis is humiliating for the US, it's downright impossible for Abbas and his Arab allies. In scrapping the freeze and opposing any attempt to take the conflict to the UN, the Americans have left them with no diplomatic, peaceful options. And resistance has never been part of Abbas's armory.

Instead, he will be left heading a West Bank PA obligated to provide unconditional security to Israeli settlers while offering only conditional economic security to a small part of its people. He will also have to bless indirect negotiations with an Israeli government, the core settler constituency of which has made colonization, especially in East Jerusalem, the touchstone of support.

Such a political reality cannot last. But the likely victim of any opposition will not be Israel or even the settlements but Abbas and those other Arab leaders who have given license to a process that has long been void of substance. For the last two years the hope had been that Obama would spare them such a fate. But Obama has no policy other than capitulation when faced by the obduracy of Netanyahu's Israel -- and neither do they.

'Netanyahu hails US retreat on settlement freeze demands'

Haaretz (Israel); December 13, 2010

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed on Monday a US decision to drop efforts to achieve a construction freeze on Israeli settlements and focus on resolving core issues of the Middle East conflict.

"To reach peace, we have to discuss the issues that are truly delaying peace ... I welcome the fact that we will now begin discussing these issues and try to narrow gaps," Netanyahu said in a speech to an economic forum, hours before a US envoy George Mitchell was due to arrive in Israel.

In the speech, Netanyahu cited issues such as his demand that Palestinians recognize Israel as a Jewish state, security arrangements and the future of Palestinian refugees.

Mitchell will meet with Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Monday evening to put forth US ideas for moving the peace process forward.

Mitchell is expected to make clear to Netanyahu that the Obama administration wants the prime minister to take a position in the coming weeks on the core issues, with an emphasis on borders.

Mitchell is also scheduled to hold talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah. But the brunt of the work will be in Israel because the Palestinians have already submitted their opening positions on all the core issues -- borders, security, Jerusalem, refugees, water and the settlements.

The Americans have heard little new from Netanyahu, with the exception of ideas on security and aspects considered secondary such as the environment and the economy.

Mitchell's visit to Israel will be his first in three months. On September 15 he took part with Clinton in a tripartite meeting with Netanyahu and Abbas.

Direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians stalled when Israel's 10-month freeze on settlement construction expired on September 26.

Last week, the US and Israel announced that talks on a deal for Israel to renew the settlement freeze in exchange for a set of US guarantees had reached a dead end.

The US now wants a return to indirect Israeli-Palestinian talks.

On Monday, Netanyahu hailed the US decision to drop its efforts to get Israel to renew the settlement freeze.

"I welcome this American decision. It is good for Israel. It is good for peace," Netanyahu said.

Goa, Mhadei wildlife sanctuary: Pugmarks found near Anjunem dam point to tiger presence in Goa

Pug marks found in the Anjunem dam catchment area in Goa have indicated towards the presence of the Royal Bengal Tiger in the state?s Mhadei wildlife sanctuary, located in Sattari taluka.Government officials and a senior environmentalist found the pug marks near the dam yesterday confirming the presence of tiger in the area.?The pug marks are that of a tiger and a cub. They are found in the catchment area of the dam,? Rajendra Kerkar, a renowned environmentalist, told Press Trust of India today.

Residents living in the vicinity of the dam have also supported the claim as they have been hearing the tiger roar since a fortnight.Kerkar said the presence of a tiger and cub has been felt here since December 2010 when a local Pandurang Gawas and his son saw the wild cat crossing the road that passes alongside the dam.Interestingly, last year state forest department had recorded tiger pug marks in this area during the wildlife census conducted in the state with the help of Dehradun-based Wildlife Institute of India (WII).

Yesterday, Parshuram Kambli, working on the dam, saw the pug marks and immediately informed senior officials. The state water resource department?s assistant engineer MP Hudelgaddi further passed on the information to the Goa forest department about the pug marks to which a senior forest official said that they will be sending a team of experts at the dam site to get details of the pug marks.

As per the last census, Goa had four tigers in the state forests.
