UPDATE: Rubbish moving out

We spoke with Rubbish owner Jon Lindstrom this afternoon, who says he's shocked that his landlord, Saks Building, LLC., didn't renew his lease. Lindstrom says he learned of this only yesterday.

"We're really disappointed and just scrambling to figure out what to do and how to keep it going," he says on losing the unique gallery space, which belongs to the Saks building complex on the corner of Bijou and Tejon streets.

Both Lindstrom and former Rubbish co-owner Lorelei Beckstrom say that Saks was a good landlord, and gave them very reasonable rates for a downtown space. Lindstrom adds that they had renewed the lease three to four times over the past five years. (The Independent's call to Saks has not yet been returned.)

At tomorrow's closing party, Lindstrom says, he'll collect ideas and suggestions from guests as to where Rubbish can go next, even if only temporarily. He says he'll find a way to put on the December Twenty-Ten "small art and oddities" show.

Bad news for Rubbish Gallery: According to its Facebook page last night the gallery's landlord decided not to renew its lease at the 17B Bijou St. location, forcing the five-year-old indie art haunt to vacate the space by the end of the week month. Rubbish was just voted the best art gallery in our Best Of polls.
