FACES OF THE BIG TEN
David Jackson, Penn State
Sr., Farrell, Pa./Kennedy Catholic
A fifth-year senior, Jackson completed his degree in Recreation, Parks and Tourism Management over the summer by working as an intern in the Penn State Athletic Department. Jackson worked five days a week and several weekends getting an up-close look at the inner workings of collegiate athletics as he rotated between the department's events staff, marketing department and athletic communications. Named the team's "Mr. Defense" and "Most Improved" player last year after posting a career-best 17 double-figure games and averaging nearly 11 points per game in Big Ten play, Jackson will begin work on a second degree in African and African American Studies as he completes his final season at Penn State and looks to become the program's 30th 1,000-point scorer.

Top to Bottom:
Big Ten teams boast a combined 95-21 record, good enough for an .819 winning percentage, which ranks as the highest winning average among the ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-10 and SEC. Among those conferences, the Big Ten is the only one with multiple undefeated teams and with all its teams over the .500 marker. The Big East is the only other conference with more than one undefeated squad, while the ACC is the only other conference with all its teams over .500.

Fast Starters:
The Big Ten boasts two undefeated teams in 10-0 Ohio State and 7-0 Northwestern. The Buckeyes are off to their second-best start under head coach Thad Matta, following only the 2005-06 season in which the squad opened with an 11-0 mark. The Wildcats are off to their first 7-0 start since the 1993-94 season. Ohio State and Northwestern are two of only nine remaining undefeated teams in Division I, joining a group that includes Duke, Kansas and Syracuse.

Everyone's A Winner:
Iowa's win over in-state rival Drake on Saturday pushed the Hawkeyes over the .500 mark, making the Big Ten one of just three conferences (ACC, Conference USA) in all of NCAA Division I with all of its teams claiming a .500 or better record on the season. In addition, the Big Ten and the ACC are the only two conferences in which every team owns a winning record.

Running Up The Score:
Indiana's 102-60 win over South Carolina State on Sunday marked the Big Ten's fifth 100-point game this season and the Hoosiers' second, also marking a single-game high for the program under head coach Tom Crean. Big Ten teams combined for six 100-point games all of last season, which marked the conference's highest total since the 2004-05 season when Big Ten teams also registered six 100-point contests. This year's five-game total marks the third time since 2005-06 that Big Ten teams have scored 100 or more points at least five times in a season.

Get to the Point:
Illinois' Demetri McCamey, Michigan State's Kalin Lucas, Penn State's Talor Battle, Purdue's Lewis Jackson and Wisconsin's Jordan Taylor were named candidates for the Bob Cousy Award on Monday. The honor recognizes college basketball's top point guard. The initial list of 66 will be narrowed down to 20 on Jan. 3.

Make Shots:
Northwestern's John Shurna leads the Big Ten and ranks among the NCAA's best in points per game and field-goal percentage. Ranking sixth in Division I with 64.3 shooting average and ninth with 23.7 points per game, Shurna is the only player in the country to rank among the NCAA's top 10 in points and shooting. Last week, Shurna went 10-for-11 (90.9 percent) against Long Island, tying for second on Northwestern's single-game shooting percentage list. His performance tied for sixth on the NCAA's single-game list this season. Shurna also leads the NCAA in three-point shooting percentage and is ninth in three-pointers made per game, making him one of two players in all of Division I to rank among the top 10 in each of those categories.

Give it Up:
Big Ten teams remain some of the nation's best at sharing and protecting the rock. Five conference squads rank among the NCAA's top 25 in assist-to-turnover ratio, which is tied for the lead among all conferences, while six are among the top 25 in assists per game, leading all conferences. Including Division-I leading Wisconsin, four rank among the top 20 in turnovers, which leads all conferences, and two are among the top 10 in turnover margin. The complete list of Big Ten teams and individuals among NCAA leaders can be found on Page 5 of this release.

Fantastic Freshman:
Ohio State freshman Jared Sullinger is making his mark as one of the top first-year players in the nation. The Buckeye leads his team and ranks sixth in the conference with 18.5 points per game, which is second among all Division I freshmen. The 6-9 center has five double-doubles on the year, which is second in the Big Ten and tied for the lead among all Division I freshmen. Sullinger has been tabbed the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week five times this season out of six weeks.

Big Ten Soundtrack on Repeat:
The Big Ten Conference announced last week that it will continue its basketball public service announcements entitled, Big Ten Soundtrack. The men's basketball PSAs feature musical backdrops by highly regarded artists Public Enemy and De La Soul and debuted during the Dec. 18 South Carolina at Ohio State contest on CBS Sports. Both spots will appear during the season on the Big Ten Network, CBS Sports, and ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU.

Life on the Big Stage:
This season, every Big Ten home game will be produced and distributed to a live national audience. The Big Ten Network, which is available in more than 75 million homes in the U.S. and Canada, will broadcast over 100 events on its linear channel or on www.BigTenNetwork.com. More than 75 games will be broadcast by an ESPN platform - ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU or ESPN3, and CBS Sports will carry 15 games.
