FlyBoy Wakesurf Boards - wakesurfing :: Super Ultra light wakesurf boards

We very well may be able to break 2 pounds on this wakesurf board. We were generous in some of our estimates and so the final numbers are coming out quite small. What we are appreciating is that a sub 2 pound board, while it seems possible, is significantly lighter than we really need. Therefore, we can go more robust with laminations and foam and still keep the board below 3.5 pounds That allows us to add 1.5 pounds of foam, resin and fabric. From what we are learning during this build and the next one we have scheduled, is that there are significant areas where we can reduce weight. The resin usage and skin, as well as, the choice of fabric all can contribute mightily to the over all weight. We?ve planed on a single layer of 2 oz Carbon Fiber top and bottom. This can easily be increased to two layers on a bias and it will only add about 3 oz to the total weight. This is the basic reason why we undertake these exercises, it shows us clearly where we can save weight.

So, rather than following the heard and building a wakesurf board the same way they?ve been built for the last 70 we undertake the challenge to specifically engineer the boards for the environment they will be used in and throw off those aspects of traditional design and manufacturing that keep boards heavy and weak.

Back to the construction, as mentioned in the previous post, we were generous in the deck skin and lamination, so we have to trim those flush with the rails. We start by hacking the HD foam and fiberglass with a razor, this saves sandpaper, time and effort.

We had hoped to trim off 2 oz, but came closer to 3 oz when everything was said and done. The completed core now weighs 23.2 oz.

We are continuing with the ultra light building practices by using 2 oz carbon fiber for the exterior. It?s a 42 inch wide fabric and very light weight.

After trimming the deck side lamination of the carbon fiber, it weighs in at 1.6 oz.

To recap where we are, the shaped and finalized core is at 23.2 oz. The deck side lamination weighs 1.6 oz and we expect to laminate that with 1.4 oz of epoxy, so that after the deck lamination the wakesurf board will weigh 26.2 oz. We expect the bottom lamination to add 3.0 oz also, leaving the fuly laminated wakesurf board at 29.2 oz. After that we need to hotcoat boath side and that should add 2 more ounces for a total weightof 31.2 oz. JUST a shade under the 32 oz two pound weight. Still lots to go wrong with our projections, but we are going to be very close, one way or another!
