Goa Assembly Elections: GPCC decides to go it alone at next assembly polls

The general body of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) on Friday unanimously resolved to go it alone in the next assembly elections, even as home minister Ravi Naik alleged that the drug mafia exists in the state because of support from politicians. In the presence of All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in charge of Goa desk B K Hariprasad, Congressmen, keeping aside their differences, agreed on one point: That the Congress should have no alliance with anyone in the next assembly elections.Instead of doing any good to the Congress, past experience has shown that coalition partners have no strong base in the state and, moreover, indulge in blackmailing tactics, was the refrain of most of the members at the three-and-a-half-hours long meeting held in Porvorim on Friday.

Right from GPCC president Subhash Shirodar to ministers, chief minister, MLAs and office bearers, there was one voice- that the Congress party should contest all the 40 seats on its own. There was a strong voice against continuing its alliance with the NCP in the next assembly polls, a source said.Hariprasad said he would convey the sentiments to the central leaders of the party, though he said the final decision on the alliance will be taken by the high command. The meeting also saw some fireworks from two MLAs- Santa Cruz legislator Victoria (Mummy) Fernandes and Cortalim MLA and deputy speaker Mauvin Godinho.

Lashing out at the government, Godinho said nothing is moving in the right direction and if the assembly elections are held now, the Congress would lose the polls. In his defense, the home minister in his speech said that it was only after the police tried to crackdown on drug mafia and arrested alleged dealer Dudu that guns began to fire at him and his son.?Remember, I was not dying for the home portfolio. It was given to me by central observers R K Dhawan and Sushilkumar Shinde,? Naik said.
