Colorado's enormous budget shortfall has apparently taken a victim that's sure to get attention: a state-funded free-school-breakfast program.
According to the Denver Post:
The Colorado Department of Education requested an additional $124,229 for the Start Smart Nutrition Program, which subsidizes the cost of breakfast at school for poor children, for the current budget year ending in June. However, the request failed on a 3-3 party-line vote.
Now, you just know that a story like this wouldn't be complete without a horrific quote from a Colorado Springs lawmaker. And Republican Sen. Kent Lambert doesn't disappoint:
"As a family guy myself with children and grandchildren, I take a very strong responsibility to earn money to feed my own family."
(Never mind that nearly 9 percent unemployment rate.)
Lambert ? who made headlines just yesterday for introducing a bill that would allow cops to arrest anyone they believe to be an illegal immigrant ? does note that perhaps churches could take care of families who can't afford the 30 cents a day that breakfast will cost starting sometime in March.
There's a chance that school districts could pick up that tab, too, but given their own budget troubles ? mentioned in our cover story this week ? that would seem somewhat unlikely.
