Speed Up Your Laptop

Asus70 asked the Laptops forum for speed-up tips.

You've got two approaches for speeding up a Windows PC (short of replacing it): improving the hardware and slimming down Windows.

The most cost-effective way to speed up any PC, hardware-wise, is to add RAM. You might be able to do this with your laptop--especially if you chose a money-saving configuration when you bought it.

To find out, download and run the portable version of System Information for Windows (SIW). Once the program is up, select Memory from the Hardware section to see what you've got and what the motherboard can take.

But don't be surprised if you've already maxed out your RAM. Owning a laptop limits your options for upgrading hardware. Portable PCs are just not as expandable as desktops.

Another hardware option is to replace the hard drive with a Solid State Drive (SSD). But that's extremely expensive, and will likely reduce your storage capacity.

So let's look at what we can do to speed up Windows:

Clean out your autoloaders. It's shocking how many programs load automatically every time you boot. This not only slows down the boot process, but can potentially slow down Windows itself. See Why the Slow Boots? for suggestions on fixing this thorny issue.

Consider sleeker security software. Two autoloaders you can't afford to turn off are your firewall and your real-time anti-malware (also known as antivirus) program. These really do need to be on all of the time. But some of these programs slow you down more than others. See Battle of the Security Superpowers for a discussion of how these programs effect PC speed. You might also want to check performance test results from Anti-Virus Comparative and Antivirus Ware.

Turn off Aero. The fancy, transparent look Microsoft added to Vista (and kept with Windows 7) takes up clock cycles. Personally, I think the transparent look is worth the modest performance hit, but if you disagree, turn it off by following these instructions:

In Vista, right-click the Windows desktop and select Personalize, then Window Color and Appearance. Click Open classic appearance properties for more color options (if you don't see the option, Aero is already off) and select a color scheme other than Windows Aero.

In Windows 7, right-click the Windows desktop and select Personalize. Select a theme that's displayed under the Basic and High Contrast Themes heading.

If you're running Vista, consider upgrading to Win7. It really does speed things up. But take the time to do a custom (clean) install. See How to Upgrade to Windows 7 for directions.

If upgrading your operating system seems a little extreme, than at least turn off Vista's Sidebar. Right-click a blank space on the Sidebar and select Properties. Uncheck Start Sidebar when Windows starts.

My thanks to Car54, Compnovo, and Rommel for their contributions to the original forum discussion.

The Indianapolis Museum of Art

The Indianapolis Museum of Art: Edmund Tarbell, Richard B. Gruelle, Frank W. Benson, William Merritt Chase, John Sharman, John Cotman Sell, Rembrandt, Jan Brueghel the Elder
I?ve never been to Indiana, let alone to the Indianapolis Museum of Art, so this is not a first person account. It is rather the happy result of one of my art browsing habits, using the Museum Listing feature of the Athenaeum online art resource to browse a skimming of various museums? collections (see my post on The Athenaeum).

The Athenaeum?s page for the Indianapolis Museum of Art caught my attention with pieces by John Singer Sargent, Edmund Tarbell and William Merritt Chase.

On arriving at the museum?s site, I immediately clicked through to their collection of American Painting and Sculpture to 1945, and from there started browsing through the little interactive slide presentation for American Impressionism, one of my favorite schools of painting.

Though not the most convenient browsing arrangement (a simple page of thumbnails would be better, but museums seem to love these widgets), it is still a way into the collection, clicking on the thumbnails to particular piece, then clicking through to a page of works by that artist in the museum?s collection.

To my delight, I found that not only does the museum have a terrific collection of American Impressionism, which is deep for some artists, like William Merritt Chase, they also have a nice method of presentation for works in the collection.

Thumbnails are linked to a decently sized image that opens in a pop-up, instead of the tiny cramped Zooming windows favored by many museums, letting you get a much better feeling for the work as a whole.

In addition they often have several photos of the same work, some of which have color and value reference cards in the photos, making it possible to get an accurate take on the color of the image. What a great feature! So many images of artworks on the web are off-color, even those posted by the most prestigious museums.

My exploration of the site has been brief so far, and the images I?ve chosen to highlight are more representative of my own preferences than the museum?s collections, but I was also impressed with their holdings in European Painting and Sculpture.

One might wish for a list based browsing feature, allowing an easier grasp of the holdings in a particular area, but you can search the collections for specific artist, or using broader terms like, oh, say? ?American Impressionism?.

The collection online looks well worth investigating in depth, and of course, for those who live close enough to travel to the museum in person, a treat to visit.

(Images above: Edmund Tarbell, Richard B. Gruelle, Frank W. Benson, William Merritt Chase, John Sharman, John Cotman Sell, Rembrandt, Jan Brueghel the Elder.)

Expected Sales Increase Of Christmas Flowers

Leading online flower retailer Serenata is expecting a 30% boost in sales for its Christmas Flowers this year, indicating a steady strengthening in the UK financial system.

PR9.NET November 11, 2010 - LONDON, UK - UK homes will have much more than just presents under the tree for Christmas this year. Flowers for Christmas will also be on many shopping lists for, according to one of the leading online flower shops Serenata Flowers.

With festive floral product sales continuing to boost, it's a sure indication the UK economic climate is attaining ground and the recovery is well under way.

"We anticipate orders for Christmas flower arrangements to increase an additional 30% over last year. This suggests that the lower joblessness rate we've been experiencing in the UK combined with the growth we've had in the construction, manufacturing and hospitality industries is beginning to spread. Now, people not only have extra disposable income, but they are additionally less worried about falling back into recession," explained Peter Ahl, MD of the award-winning web florist Serenata Flowers.

The online florist has additionally experienced a substantial raise in the number of first Christmas orders, which implies shoppers have learned from the recession and are planning ahead.

"The numbers advise we'll have a much better Christmas across the board than we have the last few years. More consumers are preplanning their presents and we believe this is a direct result of the recession -- consumers are budgeting, saving and organising their purchasing, rather than impulse shopping," Ahl added.

Business is flourishing for online flower shops. The industry expects to sell more than half a million xmas flowers and bouquets this season alone. And according to Serenata's statistics, over fifty percent of all Christmas flower deliveries will be purchased online.

The Christmas delivery service is popular with customers outside the UK who would like to send flowers and gifts to friends and loved ones living in the UK. Serenata believes the growing number of British expats purchasing flowers online is a good sign that, while customers are spending more than they do during the economic downturn, travel budgets may perhaps however remain tight.

"Having Christmas flowers delivered is still one of the best ways to show someone love and affection, which may be extremely hard when long distances are involved. Mix wonderful roses and flowers of all kinds with the comfort of buying flowers on the web, nevertheless, and consumers can find the perfect present for everyone, no matter where they're in the world," said Ahl.

UK economic recovery comes to surprise halt in Q4 (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's economy contracted by half a percent in the last three months of 2010, official data showed Tuesday, shocking markets which had expected a continued recovery and causing the pound to slump.

Severe winter weather in December had a strong impact, particularly on the construction sector, the Office for National Statistics said. Not counting the effect of the snow, which snarled transport and kept people away from shops before Christmas, it estimated GDP would have been flat ? still well below market expectations for at least 0.4 percent growth.

Analysts warned that the underlying performance of the British economy had taken a severe hit, casting doubt over the government's plans for sharp spending cuts and tax hikes.

"We are in for a rough ride," said Graeme Leach, chief economist of the Institute of Directors, a membership organization of business leaders. Expectations of 1.3 percent growth in 2011 would have to be downgraded, he said, and pressure would grow on the Bank of England to resume pumping money into the economy.

The pound fell sharply from $1.5901 to a low of $1.5753 immediately after the figures were announced.

The dismal figures muted any expectation that the Bank of England would soon raise its base interest rate from an all-time low of 0.5 percent to deal with persistent high inflation. Its pump-priming program of asset purchases, known as quantitative easing, was suspended in December 2009 after injecting 200 billion pounds ($320 billion) into the economy.

"However worried the Bank of England may be about its credibility, raising interest rates against a backdrop of such weak demand seems out of the question," said Simon Hayes at Barclays Capital.

"At the same time, with tax rises in the first half of 2011 already expected to hit consumer demand, the government is open to accusations of causing a double-dip recession. Plan B may need dusting off."

Britain's Treasury chief, George Osborne, said the government "will not be blown off course by bad weather."

"There is no question of changing a fiscal plan that has established international credibility on the back of one very cold month. That would plunge Britain back into a financial crisis," Osborne said.

But analysts noted that the weak figure was not due only to the poor weather.

Output of the dominant services sector dropped by 0.5 percent and construction slumped by 3.3 percent, the ONS said. Manufacturing and other production industries were a bright spot, with 0.9 percent growth.

The figures are preliminary, leaving them open to revision, and followed four quarters of growth ? including 0.7 percent in the third quarter ? as Britain climbed out of a deep recession.

Jonathan Loynes, chief European economist at Capital Economics, said the figure was "shockingly bad" and would "raise serious concerns over whether the economy is in a strong enough position to withstand the coming fiscal tightening."

Analysts generally expect growth to slow in 2011 due to the impact of government job cuts and a hike in the broad-based sales tax ? the value-added tax ? from 17.5 percent to 20 percent.

"Presumably GDP growth will now rebound pretty strongly in Q1, as it did after weather effects in Q4 2009. But other adverse forces, not least the impact of the latest VAT hike, could limit the size of the bounce," Loynes said.

Although British exporters could benefit from strong demand from booming economies in Germany, China and the Middle East, the risks of a return to recession have increased, according to Chris Williamson, chief economist for Markit.

A day earlier, a senior business leader accused Prime Minister David Cameron's government of neglecting growth while it hacked at spending.

"It's not enough just to slam on the spending brakes. Measures that cut spending but killed demand would actually make matters worse," said Sir Richard Lambert, outgoing director-general of the Confederation of British Industry.

Lambert said business growth was impeded by some government policies, including a cap on immigration, a shakeup of planning regulations, and the planned abolition of employers' rights to force workers to retire at 65 regardless of their performance.

Microsoft Launches Linux Website

CIO ?

Since this story was originally reported, it has been amended to correct the URL for the website mentioned.

Microsoft Thursday at LinuxWorld is expected to unveil a new website for users to find information about its Linux and open-source interoperability efforts, according to the executive in charge of those plans.

Bill Hilf, general manager of the platform strategy group for Microsoft, will discuss the site during his keynote at the conference in Boston Thursday morning. The site will also go live on Thursday.

Hilf, who formerly worked on Linux deployments at IBM, has been overseeing Microsoft?s Linux and open-source interoperability lab at its Redmond, Wash., campus for the past two years. He recently moved into a more senior position, replacing Martin Taylor, who has moved over to the Windows Live team. Hilf now is in charge of all of Microsoft?s open-source compatibility efforts, including its controversial Get the Facts anti-Linux campaign and its SharedSource initiative, which is the company?s own version of allowing developers access to some of its proprietary source code.

The aim of the new website is to make transparent Microsoft?s efforts to ensure its proprietary systems interoperate with open-source software, including Linux. The company also is encouraging advice about how to advance these goals, Hilf said.

"It?s going to be the interface to all of the open-source lab work Microsoft does, where a variety of people blog?including myself and others on my team," he said. "People in the community also can provide feedback and give us ideas for better interoperability."

Even the site?s name reflects this notion of an open channel of communication, Hilf said. Port 25 is the server port that sends and receives e-mail on a server, thus facilitating two-way communication, he said.

In the past several years, Microsoft has appeared to become more open-source friendly, but mainly from a market perspective. Without planning to support open source itself as a strategy, the company has realized that Linux and other open-source software arehere to stay. From a business perspective, it?s important that Microsoft technology can coexist peacefully in the same network with those products, Hilf said.

"The great thing is that as a market, we?ve gotten past the David and Goliath stuff," he said. "The reality is that customers run different technologies. ... We?re still a commercial software company, but in some cases people want to run Linux, want to run Windows virtualized, want to manage Linux using [Microsoft products]. In those situations, we can find a way to interoperate."

BP, issues management and 150 million adverse internet citations

Shares are holding up well after BP and its partners were accused of a series of cost-cutting decisions that ultimately contributed to the oil spill that ravaged the Gulf of Mexico coast over the summer, the White House oil spill commission said on Wednesday.

What is coming out in the aftermath goes much wider than the loss of life, an unprecedented environment disaster, threat of being taken over and the loss of some top executives.

Over and again, we hear criticism of poor communication. BP might expect some criticism in PR Week but is now in the spotlight as a poor communicator in the Wall St Journal, Financial Times, and BBC and has been associated with poor communication over 30,000 times online in a week.

The Monthly report will be un-nerving with critical coverage in news sites (5,000 articles this month), blogs (50,000 posts), Twitter (11,000 times), Facebook (14,000 times) - yes they have all be there. This mountain of criticism is now online and will not go away any year soon. long after the beaches are pristine again, the online aftermath will be there.

I am not going to criticise whoever was the managerin-chargeof PR at BP (it could or perhaps should be among these people). I am going to offer a view of the two million online citations that have been generated in this last terrible year for the company.

Crisis management is about preparation and the PR industry does have some very good tools to help in this regard. Planning and managing for crisis is hard work but not hugely complicated (compared to other areas of PR management). BP did not have much of a crisis communication plan in place according to the US commission report.

Recovering from a crisis is much harder and often one crisis sparks another (death - oil spill - share price fall - top executives desert - takeover threat - pressure on otheroperations- cost of being inthe spotlight - legal costs/management disruption). The level of added distraction for the Board, cost and range of threats is now significant and for some organisations such pressures can be crippling.

What is to be done?

Well, after the PR crisis management plan has been put in place and the complete review of how BP and its industry moves towards improving transparency (oh no! not another TV series about the oilmen) and next shuffle of the Board, there will have to be achange of structure (retailseparatefrom exploration and production for example) name and identity.

Why change of name and identity? Basically BP has to find a way to escape from the mountain of adverse online content that will follow it round like a bad smell for years.

The question is what is the timing for all this.

Is This the Beginning of the End For Web Mail?

The number of people accessing Web-based e-mail sites such as Hotmail and Gmail is in decline, according to new research from ComScore. Comparing November 2010 to 2009, the research firm found six percent fewer visitors arrived at webmail sites. Not only that but those who visited spent just under 10 percent less time there compared to previous years.

Could the Web mail cloud be dissipating as quickly as it formed? Perhaps not, but the signs are not good for those who've been enjoying the high-quality free services offered by corporates such as Google and Microsoft. As usage patterns change, the tech giants are going to try harder and harder to squeeze money out of us.

The visitor drop was even steeper for teenage users between 12 and 17 years old; 24 percent fewer of them visited in November 2010 compared with the same time the previous year. Their engagement figure--the amount of time spent on the site measured in minutes and pages visited--dropped by half.

Teens give a clue as to what might be partially to blame: Messaging services built into social networking sites. Teens spend so long on Facebook that it becomes an "Internet shell" and they rarely wander beyond its walls. Switching to a different site just to send a message is cumbersome. Facebook's mail service isn't perfect but it's good enough for light use (although things are set to improve).

For groups usually excluded from social networking because of their age, Web e-mail showed the kind of growth that we might otherwise have expected: Of those aged over age 55, there was a rise of 16 percent in terms of visitors compared with 2009. Of those aged over 65, there was an 8 percent rise.

The biggest threat comes from mobile devices, however. The survey recorded 36 percent growth in mobile device e-mail access. However, it isn't clear how the e-mail is being delivered--whether push services or simple POP3 was in use, for example, or even if the mobile sites for Web mail services were being utilized.

However, the executive summary is this: Things are changing in the world of e-mail, and we could be in for the biggest shakeup since the launch of Web mail itself, back in 1996 when Hotmail came online. The decline in visitors to Web-based e-mail sites won't have gone unnoticed.

Users may not come out of it well. At the moment we get an astonishing amount for nothing. Gmail offers ad-free messages, POP3/IMAP access so e-mail can be grabbed via any e-mail client, insane amounts of storage, plus various bells and whistles that make using it a dream.

As users, all that's required of us is to gaze incidentally at ads here and there, and sometimes click them if we find them interesting. Whether Gmail (or Hotmail for that matter) actually makes any money this way is a moot point. We're still in the hazy, crazy days of the Internet's teenage years; don't kill the buzz by asking questions!

Yet it's important at least to try and make money, which is why there are ads. However, if people aren't seeing them because they're using every other method of grabbing mail rather than the Website, then this might make somebody at the increasingly bureaucratic Google start to panic.

People who panic do silly things, and we can imagine what could happen: Ads in messages, limitations on the number messages downloaded via POP3/IMAP, "upgrade" fees for additional functionality, and so on. Microsoft would be doing that kind of thing right now with Hotmail if it wasn't for Google providing competition.

The big problem looming on the horizon is that mobile technology is very resistant to advertising.

A small screen size makes it unforgivable to slip a banner in here or there, for example. Pop-up ads are impossible. The only route would be intrusive ads that users tend to hate--gateway ads that have to be cleared before the user progresses to the content, for example, or adding advertising to content without the user's permission.

No doubt Facebook will be giggling with glee at such attempts, having tied its own forthcoming messaging service into a larger product that offers all kinds of additional value points and already has an unobtrusive ad system in place. Indeed, as the likes of Google Wave have proven, the way forward may be to extend e-mail beyond mere messages. Yet Google has had little success.

ComScore is quick to point out in its survey that e-mail is still one of the most popular online services, reaching 70 percent of the US population each month. There's certainly an undying thirst out there for e-mail, but how the IT giants satiate our desires is set to change as time goes on.

Does Cancer Affect Testosterone Levels in Men?

It's been known for a while that hormone levels drop in women treated for cancer. Now a study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology is showing similar effects in older men. MSNBC Health reports:

For the new study, researchers tested more than 400 men with cancers that were unrelated to testosterone.

Nearly half the men had total testosterone levels below 300 nanograms per deciliter. The researchers didn't compare the men to a control group, but note that all other studies of men without cancer have found some percentage with lowered testosterone levels, but far less than half.

The men in the current study with low testosterone also tended to be overweight or obese, and scored slightly lower on a scale designed to measure quality of life than men with "normal" testosterone levels.

However, there are some important caveats:

  • The study was sponsored by Solvay Pharmaceuticals, which manufactures a testosterone cream. Since the study was essentially designed to identify a target market for their product, that makes the results somewhat suspect. I would like to see the results replicated by another study that's independently funded--and that includes a control group, which this study didn't have.
  • Any study examining testosterone levels will be hampered by "a lack of consensus on what constitute a normal range of testosterone levels, the well-known inaccuracy of measuring serum bioavailable testosterone levels, and the considerable interindividual variation in the degree of testosterone decline associated with age," according to this 2006 article in the International Journal of Impotence Research.
  • According to that same article, it isn't even clear whether testosterone affects prostate cancer, and if there is a connection, it's that too much testosterone increases the risk of cancer. So when the researchers say that next they're going to see whether testosterone supplementation increases the prognosis for these cancer patients, they're pretty much talking nonsense.

If you're a man who's had cancer, and you're having problems such as impotence that could be related to low testosterone levels, do consult your oncologist and maybe an endocrinologist or urologist--but don't panic.

Cayenne Pepper Hemorrhoid Cure

Learn About an All Natural Hemorrhoid Cure That is Readily Available and Inexpensive

One of the greatest health benefits of cayenne pepper is that it immediately affects the cardiovascular system. It nourishes the heart, cleans the blood, and facilitates healing of the blood vessels as well.

This cure is largely unknown to most as they just trust allopathic medicine, which has a less than stellar record of curing maladies.

The cayenne pepper hemorrhoid cure is just that -- a cure. By drinking a glass of cayenne pepper water daily, you will relieve the swelling and inflammation of veins and blood vesselsin the human rectum and anus area.

Dr. John R. Christopher, the famed herbalist and naturopathic doctor, told the story of a bodybuilder friend of his who suffered from hemorrhoids so severe he had to wear a special belt to keep the hemorrhoids in place.

Now, that's a hemorrhoid problem!

After drinking cayenne pepper religiously day after day, he was able to throw away the belt as his hemorrhoids went back to normal. My personal hemorrhoid problem was literally cured in two days when I started taking cayenne regularly again, although admittedly it wasn't anywhere near as virulent as the bodybuilder's was inDr. Christopher's story.

How does the cayenne pepper hemorrhoid cure work? Could it this be legitimate? Is there an all natural hemorrhoid cure? There is. Diet is a significant reason why people have hemorrhoids. The western diet is rich in fatty, starchy foods that wreak havoc on our systems.

Let's get back to the original question of this paragraph, which is just how does cayenne pepper help heal hemorrhoids. As mentioned, cayenne pepper is great for the circulatory system as it feeds the necessary elements in the cell structure of the arteries, capillaries and veins.

Cayenne Pepper Hemorrhoid Cure?: How Does it Work?

Cayenne helps the capillaries, veins and arteries regain their elasticity of youth. Moreover, when the venous structure becomes filled with mucus, the blood "thickens" and has a harder time circulating.

When taken as a very warm glass of water, cayenne pepper will immediately warm the system, feed the heart with rich nutrients and gradually influence its power to the arteries.

As hemorrhoids are an inflammation of the veins in the anus and rectum, cayenne pepper will heal the inflammation. The result? The itching and/or swelling of the veins will gradually be relieved. In some cases within a day or two. How do you apply or use cayenne pepper to heal your hemorrhoids? I'd advise against applying it topically. It will burn (although it won't harm you) and you'll probably quit using it.

The best way to use it is to ingest it. I drink my "cayenne pepper tea" with a half to full teaspoon of cayenne (depending on heat), juice from a lemon (if I have it) and warm water.cayenne pepper

The term "cayenne pepper tea" is a misnomer and should rightly be called, "warm cayenne pepper water." It's easy really: just a glass of warm cayenne pepper water, half a teaspoon of cayenne, juice from one fresh lemon if you have it (it's optional), mix and drink. You don't need the lemon, though. It's just an alternative. Also, taking the drink with very warm water will immediately infuse your cells with nutrition. I drink mine so that the water is so hot it actually steams my glasses. Very warm cayenne is ideal for the aforementioned reason but if that is too difficult, lukewarm or warm temperature water is acceptable.

I admit it's hot to the taste, but it's tolerable and the body quickly adapts to the native head of the cayenne.

Simple but effective. Don't believe me? Fine with me. I'm no doctor but I know what works. It works. It worked for me in clearing up a prolapsed hemorrhoid problem I had in only literally two days! I am not exaggerating! Just try it for a week or less and you'll see for yourself. I will also say this: be patient.

People build up significant health problems over years and then want that health problem eliminated ina couple of days. It does happen but it's the exception, not the rule (or norm). Again, be patient. Persist and you'll see results -- I'm confident of it.

Oh, change your diet too. The culprit for hemorrhoids is a bad diet. Eat more vegetables and fruit, preferably raw. Grains are good too as they're rich in fiber.

By combining diet with this incredible medicinal herb, you'll save yourself a literal pain in the you-know-what and in your pocketbook as well.

Yours in health,

Themes for Childrens Parties

Planning a children's party can be a little overwhelming... even scary. After all, throwing a great party is something your child will remember for a long lime. On the other hand, if the party bombs they will NEVER forget it.

The easiest way to ensure a successful party is to build it around one central theme.

A theme will allow you to integrate all the different elements of the party, it will point you in the right decorating direction, and it will help you plan your activities. Having a theme is essential.

How to Choose a Theme

Choosing a theme for your child's party depends on three key factors:

- The age of the child

- The child's interests

- The time of year or reason for the party

The Age of the Child - The age of the children who will attend the party will have a lot to do with the party theme you choose. Blue's Clues might be great for a pack of three year olds, but a seven year old birthday boy would be mortified! By the same token, Harry Potter might serve you well for a group of pre-teens, but a group of kindergarteners just wouldn't get it.

The point... be sure your theme is appropriate for you child's age.

The Child's Interests - What is your child interested in? Some kids love particular sports like gymnastics or soccer, while others have a keen interest in super heros or science. Just about anything that a child is really interested in can be transformed into a great theme for a party.

Book characters, television shows, special hobbies, sports, animals, fantasy stories, heros, historical genres, cartoon characters, etc. all provide excellent theme possibilities.

The Time of Year or Reason For The Party - A halloween party has a built in theme, so a birthday around that time of year might have a Halloween or costume theme. Summer parties are often "pool parties" or outdoor themed parties. Obviously, you wouldn't have an outdoor pool party for Christmas if you live in Canada... it just wouldn't make sense.

The "Best" Way to Choose A Theme...

Talk to your child and get them involved in the planning!

Most kids have a pretty good idea of what kind of party they want. If you fail to talk it over with your child, you might both be disappointed.

Children often have unrealistic expectations. A lot of kids have a whole scenario layed out in their head -- they've imagined every little part of the party and they expect you to deliver. Talking it out can help you both find a realistic common ground.

Sometimes it also helps to provide a younger child with two or three theme choices and let the child choose his/her own party theme.

Once you've decided on a theme, it becomes fairly easy to plan the party. The invitations, decorations, food, favors, and activities will all be based on your theme. Choose a theme that truly fits your child's personality and you'll be sure to create an awesome party experience for both of you.

10 Reasons Why Windows XP Requires Long-Term Microsoft Support

Microsoft has officially discontinued support for Windows XP Service Pack 2. Although the company will continue to support Service Pack 3 through 2014, it's worth nothing that nearly 50 percent of the world's computers are still running Service Pack 2. Going forward, owners won't have the support they need to keep their systems safe.

But Microsoft's decision to stop supporting Service Pack 2 goes beyond just that version of the operating system. It makes it clear to its users that XP is losing its value to the software giant. That's unfortunate. Windows XP was the best OS release of the past decade. By slowly pushing users to its newer operating systems, Microsoft could be making a huge mistake. Not only will some folks opt to stick with XP, but others won't find happiness in Windows 7. The result is an issue that impacts all stakeholders.

Whether Microsoft likes it or not, the company needs to support XP indefinitely. It's simply too important to its operation. Here's why:

  1. Nearly 50 percent still run XP SP2

As noted, a recent study from research firm Softchoice found that nearly 45 percent of all computers are still running Windows XP Service Pack 2. That alone should be enough for Microsoft to continue supporting the operating system. Windows XP was an unbridled success that is still being employed as the go-to operating system for both consumers and companies around the world. By not supporting a key build of that operating system, Microsoft is effectively saying to nearly 50 percent of the world's computer users that they need to keep up with the times, or their data will be put into danger.

  2. The enterprise isn't switching

Microsoft's decision to no longer support XP Service Pack 2 smacks of the company trying desperately to prod the corporate world into adopting Windows 7. From a business standpoint, it's understandable. But for the enterprise, switching to Windows 7 at this point just doesn't look like the best idea. Not only are they concerned about the productivity and security problems that might come along with switching to Windows 7, but they're also heavily invested in XP and, due to the recession, may not have the available funds to invest in new technology. The vast majority of companies around the world are running XP on at least some computers. The last thing Microsoft should want to do is stop supporting those firms.

  3. What about the world?

Discussions about Microsoft's decision to discontinue its support for Service Pack 2 have left out a key component that can't be overlooked: People in developing countries rely on XP. To simply stop supporting XP would potentially cause security problems for those people, which at this point, they just don't need as technology becomes an even greater part of their lives. Microsoft's reach is second to none in the software space. It's a key component in its success. But if it decides to turn its back on XP before it should, the company would also effectively turn its back on people all over the world who rely on XP to get technology into their lives.

  4. Netbooks are a key battleground

Although speculation abounds over the future of netbooks, there is a chance that the lightweight computers will survive against tablets. And if that happens, Microsoft, which currently dominates the space with Windows XP, would be dumb to stop supporting its old operating system. Right now, Microsoft offers a version of Windows 7 designed for netbooks. But for the vast majority of consumers, Windows XP works just fine, and they don't see a reason to switch. If Microsoft doesn't support XP indefinitely, the company could put its netbook operation at risk, and potentially give Linux or even Google's Chrome OS the opening they need to capitalize. XP is extremely important in the netbook market. Microsoft can't forget that.

  5. Vista should come first

If anything, Microsoft should stop supporting Windows Vista. The predecessor to Windows 7 is arguably one of the worst operating systems the software giant has ever released. And although Microsoft tries to say that it really wasn't as bad as some folks thought, most Windows users know the truth. Whereas Windows XP was a major victory for Microsoft in the software space, Vista was a failure that the company is still trying to overcome. If it were smart, Microsoft would support XP and Windows 7. If it absolutely needs to stop supporting an operating system, it should ditch Vista.

  6. It's still being installed

How Microsoft can even consider stopping its support for Windows XP at any point in the near future is incredible. The operating system isn't being adopted as much as it was a few years ago, but there are still some consumers and even enterprise customers that are buying new computers and running Windows XP. The reason why is simple: They trust XP more than they trust some of Microsoft's latest operating systems. As more people download XP, it would seem that Microsoft would be smart to back off from its desire to stop supporting XP entirely. After all, XP's market share is holding steady. And to stop supporting it means Microsoft will leave a major piece of the market out in the cold.

  7. Security implications

There are real and concerning security implications to Microsoft's desire to stop supporting Windows XP. When Windows isn't updated, those who run outdated software put themselves in undue risk. And by doing so, they're effectively putting the rest of the Windows ecosystem at risk. But when Microsoft decides it will no longer support a software version that is being used by nearly half of the world's PC population, it's Microsoft that could be creating more security problems. Hackers will target those still running XP and find ways to make those problems spread. It's a real issue that Microsoft must consider.

  8. Pushing isn't the best idea right now

The last thing Microsoft should be doing right now is annoying Windows XP users. When the company released Vista, it was clear that Microsoft was in trouble. Consumers and enterprise customers didn't want any part of the operating system, and even vendors took issue with it. Now, Microsoft is trying to rebuild relationships. By stopping support for Service Pack 2, and eventually discontinuing its support for Windows XP, Microsoft is going about it all wrong. Whether it likes it or not, the market is still heavily invested in Windows XP. And if it wants to see them adopt Windows 7, it will need to be patient. It won't be easy, but it's the smart move.

  9. IT manager push-back

Let's not forget that IT managers play a key role in the success or failure of Windows. As the tech experts at their business, they tell the executives what operating systems and software solutions the company should be using. By discontinuing support for Windows XP Service Pack 2, and eventually Windows XP, Microsoft is forcing the average IT manager's hand. That's not a smart move. IT managers will decide if companies should opt for Windows 7, stick with Windows XP or go with something new, like Mac OS X. Microsoft shouldn't want to annoy IT managers simply because it wants users to move to Windows 7. That will never be a smart move.

  10. Windows 7 isn't a profit leader

For the time being, Windows 7 will not be the key to Microsoft's success. Although the company hopes to add more Windows 7 customers going forward, it's highly unlikely that a mass influx of users to the new operating system is coming anytime soon. Realizing that, Microsoft can't simply rely on the new operating system, and turn its back on all others. Yes, Vista was a mess, but Windows XP wasn't. By eventually stopping support for XP, Microsoft is putting all of its revenue potential into Windows 7, an operating system that that has shown some early success, but so far hasn't proven that it can best Windows XP.

Startup for sale on eBay (and it?s a great deal)

One of the best programmers I know is selling a web application on eBay, that he?s been developing and running for the past three years. Given the starting price and considering what one lucky person or company will walk away with, I must say, it?s an amazing deal. I?m writing about his auction here so that I can help it get the proper exposure it deserves and because I think it?s an incredible bargain for anyone who is interested!

BlogBabel on eBay

BlogBabel, the aforementioned site/web app, is a blog indexing and aggregation service that began in 2006. Amongst its features are the ability to detect and show the most popular blog discussions, weekly posts, books, videos, and even popular blog entries based on their location (through geotagging). It also features leaderboards of the most popular blogs.

Its codebase uses Python and Django, and consists of 27,359 physical lines of code (roughly equivalent to 6.46 person-years, according to sloccount). The R&D alone makes this application worthwhile to an interested party.

At this stage, BlogBabel has an Italian interface (located at it.blogbabel.com) and aggregates almost 15,000 Italian blogs and 5 million posts. Changing the interface to make it an international project that?s available in several languages, or switching to English (solely), would not be challenging in the least (they used to run a Spanish version as well, for example, but decided to discontinue it so as to focus on the Italian one).

BlogBabel has been featured in the mainstream Italian media and has had a noticeable influence on the Italian blogosphere. One could argue that it has been the yellow pages of the Italian blogosphere. Because of this, Ludovico Magnocavallo (the site?s creator) received substantial offers to buy BlogBabel in the past, but he turned them down because he wanted to continue building this site. Now however, due to personal circumstances and lack of time/resources, he?s willing to sell this application for what may amount to far less than its true value. And here?s the real bargain, the starting price, without a reserve, is 4,999 Euros. This is of course, a ridiculously low price for the value being offered. But Ludovico believes in letting the market decide.

If I had the funds lying around, I would buy it myself and gear it towards the English speaking world (in conjunction with the pre-existing Italian version). It?s a prepackaged, virtually ready-made startup with a great deal of potential both in its current state and in terms of what it could grow to become.

To recap, the auction includes:

  • The domain name blogbabel.com (it.blogbabel.com has a pagerank of 6);
  • The full codebase (almost 30,000 lines of code);
  • A database containing 3 years worth of data relating to the Italian blogosphere (more than 30 GB, lots of data-mining opportunities);
  • 4 hours of work to help you with setting up the site on your own servers.

BlogBabel has been running smoothly for three years, and is currently under-marketed. Optimizing ads, affiliates, and similar sources of revenue wouldn?t be hard at all, especially if one were to aim this site at the English speaking world.

Also, Ludovico has already implemented most of the code that?s necessary to allow users to have accounts (through OpenID), but since these ?social features? are not fully implemented yet, they have not been deployed in production. A buyer could decide to disregard them or finish implementing them and roll out a technorati-like service. The winner of this auction could decide to implement support for Twitter, comments on social networks, sentiment analysis, etc, on their own. The possibilities are really limitless when you start with a solid engine and crawler, and already have a great deal of data at your fingertips.

I know Ludovico and he?s a stand-up guy. If you are interested in this great deal, you can bid here. If you have technical questions about this auction, please feel free to contact him directly through eBay.

UPDATE (September 8, 2009): Ludovico received an undisclosed offer for the site and a few years of maintenance work, so the auction for the site alone was suspended.
