Applauding the orchestra for offering encores

Sibelius wasn't anywhere else on Noseda's program, yet Waltz Triste is wrought of the same easily recognizable material - that is, the stuff of top-40 classical radio, which made it most apt.

The original repertoire for this night was to have included Prt's Collage ber B-A-C-H and Bruckner's Symphony No. 7. But when back troubles led to the cancellation of conductor Donald Runnicles, that somewhat specialized repertoire disappeared. Nzet-Sguin, already in town, would have been the obvious replacement, but "Yannick was unfortunately not available to do this week," an orchestra spokeswoman said. "He also was ill last week, so this period is much-needed additional rest for him."

Noseda was nearby conducting the Metropolitan Opera and agreed to add these two concerts. (You can find him Saturday leading a matinee of La Traviata, and still have time to get to Verizon Hall for his Philadelphia Orchestra evening appearance. So, presumably, will he.)

Runnicles' program would have been more interesting. The Bach Concerto for Two Violins and String Orchestra was kept, but Prt and Bruckner were replaced with Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances for the Lute, Suite No. 3, and Dvorak's Symphony No. 8. The populist theme didn't exactly flood the hall with listeners, but, thankfully, Noseda's interpretations were hardly generic.

Google Android tablets gain traction with developers

Apple iPad remains the top tablet targeted by app builders in survey

Although Apple's iPad remains number one in the hearts of tablet application developers, Google Android tablets are increasingly piquing programmers' interest, according to a survey conducted earlier this month.

In a survey of 2,235 developers by IDC and tools vendor Appcelerator, 74 percent of respondents were "very interested' in building applications for Android tablets, up from 62 percent in the previous iteration of the survey from last September. The formidable iPad attracted the interest of 87 percent of respondees, up 3 points from the last survey. A report based on the latest survey, entitled "Appcelerator IDC Mobile Developer Report, January 2011," is being released Tuesday.

[ RIM officials last week talked up enterprise plans for their BlackBerry and related products. | Stay on top of the latest issues in software development with InfoWorld's Developer World newsletter.]

"The interest has spiked significantly, where Android tablets are nearing iPads in their interest level," said Scott Schwarzhoff, Appcelerator vice president of marketing. Appcelerator sees a correlation between increased interest and the announcement of 85 Android tablets at this month's Computer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Developers listed price, minimized fragmentation, and the upcoming Honeycomb software as the most crucial factors for Android tablets to succeed. Developers are expected to build applications for newspapers, rich media, entertainment, and conferencing for Android tablets, Schwarzhoff said.

One factor that does not seem to be affecting interest in the Android platform overall was Oracle's lawsuit against Google claiming patent infringement. Almost no one was bothered by it in the last survey, and the issue was not even raised in the current survey, Schwarzhoff explained. "The common belief is that Oracle and Google will work it out," he said.

Appcelerator polled developers on their wish list for the upcoming iPad 2; new camera capabilities, a USB connector, and an improved retina display were all cited. Also, RIM's upcoming PlayBook tablet grew in interest from 16 percent of developers last September to 28 percent now.

There was good news for Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 smartphone platform in Appcelerator's survey. "Windows Phone 7 came out better than expected," said Schwarzhoff. Interest in building for the software giant's new platform increased to 36 percent, up from 28 percent in the previous survey.

The new figure was just 2 percentage points behind the number of developers who want to build for RIM's far more established BlackBerry smartphone. BlackBerry had the interest of 34 percent of developers in the previous survey. The iPhone, however, drew the interest of 92 percent of developers; the figure was 91 percent last time around.

Bonus CineFiles: Family jewels, Irish tools and Indonesian cool!

Most weeks, I review more DVDs than the Indy can fit into print. You can look for extra write-ups here, on the IndyBlog.

Gene Simmons Family Jewels: The Complete Seasons 4 and 5 (NR)
A&E

While it is marketed as such, KISS frontman Gene Simmons' ?reality? show is anything but; this is as fraudulent and staged as your favorite network sitcom, minus the irritating laugh track. That being said, Family Jewels is one of the best sitcoms on TV, thanks to the completely likable cast of characters: Gene, the hapless dad; Shannon, the wise-cracking mom; Nick, the charmingly awkward son and Sophie, the upbeat daughter. In Season 4, the gang has a Sweet 16 party, plays the blues in Memphis, dons firefighting gear, trains for roller-derby and adopts a new puppy. Meanwhile, Season 5 starts off with Gene on tour and Shannon with (possibly) cancer, but, of course, things get back to goofy when Gene celebrates his 60th and gets involved with alligators, and goes to Comic-Con to pimp Nick's book. Cirque du Soleil even makes a creepy appearance. Purely disposable entertainment, to be sure, but it's purely disposable entertainment at its best.

Turning Green (R)
Image Entertainment

If you were to judge Turning Green by cover alone, you'd think you were in store for a brutal Boondock Saints rip-off. Upon viewing, however, we're treated to a quirky coming-of-age comedy that merely happens to feature crime in the slightest, most pervy of ways. Teenage American James is forced to move with his brother to Ireland after the death of his mother. While most of us would think that's awesome, he hates it and can't wait to get back to the ghettos of Boston. He spends most of his time masturbating and doing stupid bar tricks for quick cash, but when an opportunity to earn more arises via the local bookie, he jumps in and starts to kinda sorta learn the trade. And what does he do with it? He buys porno mags from London and creates a spank-book black market of sorts, and now the bookie wants his cut. So I guess it's more like the Poon-dock Saints, am I right?

Merantau (R)
Magnolia Home Entertainment

I've done my best here with CineFiles to highlight the best of the Thai action film boom, but, as that trend starts to wane, it's becoming pretty clear that the Indonesians are coming out of nowhere, delivering a brutal leg-sweep like the impetuous young Turks that they are to take the martial arts movie throne. First up is the exciting Merantau. Sure, the plot ? a young country boy heads to the big city to find himself, but only finds trouble from the local gangsters ? is a retread, especially of the Tony Jaa flick Ong-Bak, but you didn't come here for plot! You came for pure foot-to-face fight choreography, which it delivers in spades. Highlighting the very fluid Indonesian martial art of Silat, or, more specifically, Silat Harimau, Marentau may not become a classic, but it's definitely a hell of a start and should pique the interest of American action fans immediately.

Cayenne Pepper and Migraines

Does Cayenne Pepper Eliminate Migraines?

Cayenne Pepper is an incredible medicinal herb that builds and nourishes the heart, immediately equalizing blood pressure upon its ingestion.

The health benefits of cayenne pepper are many and varied and for more information on its uses, please read the other pages in this website that you can see on the left-hand panel.

In this short article, I'd like to write about the effect of cayenne pepper upon migraines. Migraine headaches plague many. In fact, over 45 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches with 28 million suffering from migraines.

I suspectthose figures, percentage wise, are the same in Europe and in Australia and New Zealand.

I am not a doctor but a close friend, who is like my mother to me, has had virulent migraines until she started taking cayenne. Her doctor conveyed to her that migraines are caused by various stimuli, including but not limited to blood vessel contraction.

cayenne pepperIn fact, according to WebMD.com, "The exact causes of migraines are unknown although they are related to blood vessel contractions and other changes in the brain as well as inherited abnormalities in certain areas of the brain."

Moreover, WebMD.com also states that migraines are also heightened or even caused by light sensitivity, loud noise or strong odors, intensenausea or vomiting, aloss of appetite, and finally stomach upset or stomach pain.

I've personally never been afflicted with migraines; my adopted mother has, though. Sitting at her computer too long causes eye strain, which can cause a migraine. Anecdotal evidence suggests this is not uncommon.

More Health Benefits of Cayenne Pepper

There's good news: There is a natural cure for migraines. It is cayenne pepper. At the very least, it will severely lessen the recurrence of migraines. So while it may not be a "cure," it will certainly give some relief. Let me quote in full what my relative wrote on the matter (she's the widow of my third cousin):

I have had migraines for nearly 40 years now. They started about the time I began menopause. My headaches were not diagnosed as migraine, however, until about 16 years ago. I have tried everything from Aleve up to 2 treatments of Botox and nothing helped except ... cayenne pepper. It stops the headache, if taken at onset, 3 times out of 4. I get these headaches 2 to 4 times a week. You can't just sprinkle cayenne on your food, you have to drink it. Start with a tiny bit in half a glass of warm water, stir well, and drink it, follow it with cold water to stop the burning sensation in your mouth. Work up to a full tsp of cayenne. I use cayenne on my food as well. It is my miracle med and is a lot cheaper than Imitrex or Maxalt or preventive meds such as Topamax or Depacote, and there is no side effect with cayenne except for a little burning sensation in the mouth that doesn't last. (Disclaimer: This is my opinion and not to be considered medical advise without further research & discussion with your physician.)

When my relative told me that her doctor said the main cause as far as they can tell is that migraines are caused by a constriction of the blood vessels in the head, my ears perked up.

One of the chief claims of cayenne pepper is that it immediately equalizes blood pressure throughout the body. As written elsewhere in this site, famed herbalist and naturopathic doctor Dr. John R. Christopher said he stopped many a heart attack victim if he could simply get a teaspon of cayenne pepper tea in them.

Once the heart attack was stopped, he had them drink a full glass or cup of cayenne pepper tea. (Drinkingan eight ounce glass of warm cayenne pepper water is what Dr. Christopher termed "cayenne pepper tea.")

Cayenne pepper will equalize the blood pressure and thus relieve pressure in the head region. That is why my loving relative has had some tangible success with cayenne. Quite frankly, I knew cayenne peppercayenne was great for your heart and venous structure and in immediately stopping bleeding but not migraines. It only further enhances my respect for this wonderful herb that is largely passed over by the medical community.

So, if you're a migraine suffer, try cayenne pepper. Cayenne pepper and migraines go hand-in-hand like peas and carrots. Drink at least a glass a day but if you can working up to 2 to 3 a day starting with just a third ofa teaspoon. It will help. It may not completely eliminate your migraines but at the very least it will mitigate its effects and the frequency of the migraines.

(The goal should be to be able to take a full teaspoon of cayenne daily.)

Take a glass of cayenne pepper tea or water upon the outset of the migraine headache and you should see results within a few minutes. Combine it with deep breathing and relaxed images and this should help significantly.

As always, talk to your doctor about your migraines -- especially if they're chronic. I hope this cayenne pepper and migraines web page has been useful to you.

Yours in health,

Lidia Kaminska on the accordion at the Art Museum

Kaminska played Bach. She needn't have reminded the audience that her black-and-white portable is sometimes referred to as the "small sister of the organ" since she made the most of the idea in deed. Transcendence wasn't guaranteed, even from a player who has a doctorate in accordion performance. The quality that makes her passage into art so natural is her total manipulation of every aspect of the instrument.

In the Prelude and Fugue in A minor, BWV 543, she was as dexterous as any keyboard player, delineating fugal voices in individual shades. She exploited her instrument's advantage over the harpsichord for which Scarlatti's sonatas were written, shaping phrases with a subtle dynamic scheme. She was an illusionist in a piece twice removed from its original incarnation, Paganini's Etude in E major, "La Chasse," in a transcription for accordion adapted from a Liszt arrangement. With figures in different registers speaking to each other, she was no less virtuosic than Joshua Bell.

Kaminska didn't neglect the accordion's folksy roots; the program's second half was devoted to Piazzolla. Here she was joined by partners on violin, bass and guitar who were plenty fine. But one operated at a completely different level.

Argentine pianist Octavio Brunetti, a smooth synthesis of classical technique and jazz liberation, was a monster talent. Every note was part of a bigger idea. He referenced Debussy's colors and Liszt's virtuosity, and ventured into gorgeous harmonic complexities. He and Kaminska shared an understanding of what makes Piazzolla tick: the swagger, the all-is-lost moments of sweet desperation, the structured chaos, and all the micro-shapings that make those moods so sharply felt.
