The Best Of 'Song Of The Day'

Gang Of Four

Gang of Four releases a politically outspoken comeback album in January.

Every weekday, NPR Music's Song of the Day features a new piece of music ? and gives users a chance to play the track, link to the artist's websites and read about what makes each selection special.

But five songs a week can add up to an overwhelming burden for listeners, so NPR guest host Audie Cornish recently brought in Song of the Day editor Stephen Thompson to showcase the latest highlights. Here, they discuss The Extra Lens' "Only Existing Footage" (a beautiful showcase for the songwriting of The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle); Pedro Moraes' "Zingareio" (in which the musician dresses up the sounds of '70s and '80s Brazilian pop music); Mogwai's "I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead" (a portentous live instrumental by the long-running Scottish band); Gang of Four's "Never Pay for the Farm" (a fresh-sounding comeback for a band made famous in the late 1970s); and Scuba's "Before (After)" (in which electronic musician Paul Rose creates a woozy and disorienting remix of his own song).
