NUDE closes early

An e-mailed response from Basham:

We had a lot of events booked for Christmas and it was easier to take down the show rather than switching it every other day. Unfortunately, the gallery also works as an events center, and the clientele booking the gallery for their holiday parties are adverse to having nudity so prominently displayed. It is rather unfortunate, but by being forced to look at the positives, I realize that a small step is often better than no attempt at all. Perhaps in a few years, Colorado Springs will be completely ready to accept something new. I have faith in our town.

??? ORIGINAL POST, 4:04 P.M., WEDNESDAY ???

When we spoke with Mellissa Basham, creator of Ephesium Events, about the exhibition NUDE she made it clear that she knew the concept of a nude photography show would be tough sell to John and Jane Q. Artlover. And though its inherent shock value certainly played a part in its commission, it's possible she didn't know how hard a sell.

Though we've been unable to reach Basham or Il Postino ? the restaurant who's backroom gallery space hosted the show ? to confirm the exact reasoning, it's clear that the show was taken down early ? very early. Scheduled to run through Nov. 30, the exhibition was pulled after a week or so, says Indy graphic designer Rebecca Tillett, whose work was featured.

Because one of Tillett's photographs was pulled the night before the show opened due to its racy content, one theory on the closure is that ownership eventually balked at the risqu spread. This post is being updated as we hear back from the principal players; in the meantime, click below to see the (very) NSFW photo removed by the gallery.
