FACES OF THE BIG TEN
Stu Douglass, Michigan
Jr., Carmel, Ind./Carmel
A junior captain on a Michigan team that boasts no seniors, Stu Douglass came to Ann Arbor with the reputation as a shooter, but has proven to be far more. In his two-plus seasons as a Wolverine, Douglass has become one of Michigan?s top defensive players on the perimeter. Last season, he also took on the role of point guard, playing the position for the first time in his basketball career. This season, Douglass has taken on another role to help the team, that of sixth-man for the Maize and Blue.

The Week That Was:
After two weeks of Big Ten play, three teams remain undefeated in the conference standings. Purdue leads the Big Ten at 4-0, while Illinois and Ohio State are 3-0. Conference action continues on Tuesday as Michigan State hosts Wisconsin at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2 and Penn State hosts Illinois at 9 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.

Raking in the Rankings:
Six Big Ten teams are ranked in the latest ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, which is second among all conferences. Only the Big East (seven ranked teams) has more, while the Big 12 is third with five ranked squads. Ohio State leads the Big Ten, coming in at No. 2 for the seventh straight week, while Purdue follows at No. 8, marking the Boilermakers' highest position since Nov. 22 when they were also ranked eighth. Illinois comes in at No. 16, up four spots from last week, followed by Wisconsin who holds its highest rank this season at No. 21. Michigan State (No. 24) and Minnesota (No. 25) round out the Big Ten's ranked teams, while Penn State is receiving votes in the coaches poll. In the Associated Press (AP) poll, Ohio State comes in at No. 2, followed by No. 8 Purdue, No. 16 Illinois and No. 20 Wisconsin. The Badgers are making their first appearance of the year in the AP top 25, while Purdue earns its highest rank of the season from the organization. Minnesota and Michigan State, respectively, are the first two teams receiving votes outside the AP top 25.

Sharp Shooters:
Illinois set a program high by shooting 70.5 percent from the floor in a win over Northwestern last week, breaking the previous school record of 69.1 percent set in 1985 and marking the second-highest single-game performance in the NCAA this season. The outing marked the highest single-game shooting mark by a Big Ten team since Ohio State shot 71.4 percent against Presbyterian on Dec. 15, 2007, and the highest in a Big Ten game since Michigan State shot 73.3 percent against Ohio State on Feb. 7, 2004. Illinois leads the Big Ten with a 64.7 percent shooting average during conference games, having shot at least 55 percent from the field in all three of its Big Ten contests. Overall, the Illini are shooting at a 49.2 percent clip, which is second in the Big Ten and 13th in the nation. Big Ten-leading Ohio State is shooting 50.1 percent, which is fourth in the NCAA.

Three is the Magic Number:
Purdue junior Ryne Smith tied a Big Ten record by going 5-for-5 from beyond the arc in the Boilermakers' win over Penn State last week. The performance tied a single-game three-point field-goal percentage mark, and he became the 31st player in conference history to make five or more threes without a miss in a game. He also became just the 18th player to accomplish the feat during a conference game. Ohio State's Jon Diebler also matched the feat earlier this season, going 5-for-5 against Indiana on Dec. 31.

Fantastic Freshman:
Ohio State freshman Jared Sullinger is establishing himself as one of the top players in the country, regardless of class. The 6-9 center was named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week on Monday, earning his third honor of the year. He becomes the first freshman to earn three or more weekly honors since Michigan's Daniel Horton in 2002-03. He has also been named Big Ten Freshman or Co-Freshman of the Week eight out of nine weeks this season. He currently ranks sixth in the conference with 17.9 points per game and second with 10.3 rebounds per contest. In conference games, his totals increase to 19.3 points and 11.0 rebounds per game, ranking him third and second, respectively, in the Big Ten.

Leading the Way:
Last week, a pair of Big Ten seniors set major career records at their respective schools. Ohio State's David Lighty picked up his school-record 111th win as a member of the Buckeyes when OSU defeated Minnesota on Sunday. He tallied 35 as a freshman, 25 as a sophomore, 29 as a junior and seven during the 2008-09 season in which he received a medical redshirt. That same day, Purdue's E'Twaun Moore became the Boilermakers' all-time leader in minutes played during the team's victory over Iowa. In addition, Penn State's Talor Battle is poised to break the school's career minutes record of 4,063 in the Nittany Lions' game on Tuesday, while Northwestern's Michael Thompson is on pace to break his program's minutes played record of 3,885 on Wednesday.

Fast Starters:
With a 16-0 record, Ohio State remains one of only five undefeated teams in NCAA Division I. Of those squads, only three have 16 or more wins, a group made up of the Buckeyes, San Diego State (17-0) and Syracuse (16-0). Ohio State's start is the fourth-best in program history and best since the Buckeyes won their first 17 to open the 1990-91 season.

Give it Up:
Big Ten teams and players are some of the nation's best at passing and protecting the ball. Five Big Ten squads rank among the NCAA's top 25 in assists per game, while four are among the top 10 in assist-to-turnover ratio, including NCAA-leading Wisconsin. The Badgers' Jordan Taylor leads all individuals in assist-to-turnover ratio, while Illinois' Demetri McCamey and Michigan's Darius Morris are both tied for fourth in assists per game. Wisconsin also leads the nation in turnovers per game, while four more Big Ten teams are ranked in the NCAA's top 25 in the category. A complete list of Big Ten teams and players among the NCAA's leaders can be found on Page 5 of this release.

Dynamic Duos:
Purdue boasts one of the most prolific scoring duos in the nation in JaJuan Johnson and E'Twaun Moore. The pair of Boilermakers are the only two players in the country to each rank among the NCAA's top 50 in points per game. Johnson is 34th with 19.4 points per game, while Moore is 48th with an average of 18.8 per contest. Johnson and Moore rank third and fifth, respectively, in the Big Ten in scoring, combining for an average of 38.2 points per game. Johnson and Moore and Wisconsin's Jon Leuer and Jordan Taylor are the only pairs of teammates that each rank in the Big Ten's top 10 in points per game. Including Johnson and Moore and Leuer and Taylor, the Big Ten has five pairs of teammates that account for more than 30 points per game. The complete list can be found below.

Big Ten Duos Averaging 30.0 or More PPG
Johnson (19.4) & Moore (18.8), PUR - 38.2 ppg

The Big Ten is tied for the lead among all conferences with six players named to the John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 30, the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced on Jan. 6, with Illinois' Demetri McCamey, Northwestern's John Shurna, Ohio State's Jared Sullinger, Purdue's JaJuan Johnson and E'Twaun Moore and Wisconsin's Jon Leuer making the cut.
